Today’s interview was super practical. I had the pleasure of interviewing an incredible entrepreneur, Kimmye Bohannon. She is one of the founders of The Weekly Juicery. Kimmye has completely made it in the juicing industry and built a fabulous business by being steadfast in acknowledging that she is not there to make things taste good, but to make you feel amazing. She has been consistent in setting the highest possible standard in terms of what she creates and puts out there.

This episode we get right into the nitty-gritty of juicing. We talk about the benefits of juicing vs. smoothies vs. just eating your vegetables whole. We also talked all about how to take the grinds, fiber, and clean up — all the components of juicing that dissuade us — and turn them into some really incredible ideas in your kitchen. If you’ve ever looked at juicing and tried to understand how it helps you and how to include it in your weekly routine — then this interview is for you!

Jun 5, 2018

Today’s guest is a badass for sure — she opens up the interview with, “Listen, I started out wanting to change the world,” when I asked her what her vision for her life was. These are the kind of women I resonate with very quickly!

Annette Dubreuil was my guest today and what we really dived deep into is this concept called ‘focusing.’ Focusing is a tool to enable us to understand and interpret the feelings we have in our body as they relate to our current mindset or psychology. Focusing is an incredibly interesting and useful tool that can enable all of us to gather more information to make decisions with respect to our lives. It is the perfect complement for an entrepreneur when they’re looking for insight into the types of decisions that they need to make in their lives.

This is what started her career as an environmentalist and she very quickly learned that it wasn’t necessarily the ideas but the systems, the businesses, the organizations, the stakeholders, and the environmental movement that required a new framework in order to be effective in a rapidly changing world. These pressures and understandings caused her to change her career and that is how she discovered ‘focusing.’

Annette is a consummate professional and was an absolutely fascinating guest to have on today’s podcast.

Key Takeaways:

[1:27] All about this week’s badass guest, Annette Dubreuil.

[3:03] Welcoming Annette Dubreuil to the podcast!

[3:23] Annette’s journey that got her to where she is today, her original motivation to become an environmentalist, and how she got introduced to focusing.

[4:38] What is exactly is ‘focusing?’

[6:00] The six steps to focusing.

[8:16] How long do these steps take?

[8:49] What does the ‘unpack’ stage mean in the context of focusing?

[10:55] How do we get into our body, opposed to our head? As a focusing newbie, how long does it take?

[13:04] What are the common ways our body speaks to us that we’ve been blocking off or ignoring?

[15:18] How do focusing and other naturopathic remedies (such as food, medicine, or strategic movement) work together?

[17:38] What does it actually mean to be in your body instead of your head? And how to get ready to focus.

[19:25] Is the concept of connect to the work and ideas of ___ and ___?

[21:45] Do things happen in the body, in turn creating a result or do things happen in our awareness then travel to the body? Or can it be both?

[25:35] What type of people do really well with focusing?

[27:00] Is focusing a tool about resolving physical issues or is it a tool that enables physical issues to draw your attention to a mindset or psychology?

[27:43] Annette’s commentary on how men and women experience focusing differently.

[32:27] How is focusing going to leverage Annette’s original mission of ‘changing the world?’

More About Annette Dubreuil

Annette is passionate about sustainability and has been since she was little and growing up on the northeast shores of Lake Superior, in Wawa, Ontario. She began her education in environmental science, wanting to better understand the planet in order to help “save it.” She quickly learned that we knew quite a bit about the planet already and that it was our organizations that needed to change. After completing an MBA in sustainability and strategy, it became apparent that for organizations to change people need to change first. The use of focusing as a catalyst for personal and professional growth is Annette’s current area of interest.

Annette’s professional career has been focused on advancing and disseminating cutting-edge sustainability research and practice. More About Sarah Huggins

If you’re dreaming about ditching your day job to pursue a lifelong calling, Sarah Huggins has been there, done that. “I spent 10 years as a lawyer and I enjoyed it, but my passion just seemed to grow and grow and grow, and it seemed inevitable that this was something I had to do, or I’d live to regret it,” says Huggins.

That passion: her deep love of cooking, shaped by her West Coast roots. The inevitable: opening her own restaurant, Mary Be Kitchen (21 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto), to share her “whole food for the soul” philosophy.

Huggins has already established herself as a food blogger; she’s been dishing out fuss-free, family-friendly recipes on her website, Kiwi & Bean (the nicknames for her husband and her daughter, respectively), since 2013. Now, with her new fast-casual spot in midtown, she’s welcoming all of Toronto to her table. (fleetstreetmag.com/city/mary-be-kitchen-toronto/)

CALL TO ACTION

May 22, 2018

Anyone who’s an entrepreneur will resonate with this idea that entrepreneurship is, in and of itself, a spiritual journey. The sheer act of putting something out into the world and hoping that people pick it up creates so much awareness around the blocks and self-work you really need to do get your idea and capacity for impact out there.

It is for this reason that my guest today does what she does. Jen Mavros is a modern day spiritual messenger. She’s an incredible woman with a very diverse background as it pertains to understanding the blockages that are holding us back from being our best, possible selves. She’s currently working towards a doctorate in Metaphysical Sciences in Las Vegas, Nevada.

My guest today, Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum, was 65 years old when she decided to found her business, The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy. She saw a need and she saw how her skills would be able to complement something that is so imperative to our successful changes in health behavior — which is our own need for coaches. Sandra approached The Institute for Functional Medicine and said, ‘As someone with a background as a teacher and a psychotherapist, I can develop curriculum and teach people to be coaches for your practitioners’ — and the rest was history.

What’s so incredible about this interview is that we touch on all these different elements of behaviour change — not just from a perspective of what’s valuable for a practitioner, but how do you, as an individual, find the key elements that are going to help you be successful in actually addressing and changing your health. We got into all sorts of elements of coaching — but most importantly, we got into how we leverage them to take your life forward.

This is a fascinating interview if you are looking to understand how to leverage your own business, how to leverage a coach in your own life and health journey, and the basics of how to move your life forward.

CALL TO ACTION

May 8, 2018

So I want you to picture this scenario: your marriage is falling apart, you are deeply conflicted about whether or not your career is in alignment with your goals, you’re on the opposite end of the country from your family and your core support systems, and the very first thought that comes to mind as all of these different things intersect and culminate is that “I need to float.”

This is the experience of Lindsay MacPhee. She is the founder of the Floatation Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We explore Lindsay’s journey from environmental engineer to entrepreneur. She is someone deeply committed to the mindfulness experience for those people in her community and those people around her.

We’re going to talk about floatation — and if you’ve never heard of it, you’ve got to stick around because it is an incredible hack to be able to access the brainwaves and mindset that some people who experience meditation for years and years work so hard to find.

From Lindsay’s journey to the experience of floating itself — I’m sure you’re going to resonate with this entire experience that we’re about to share, so stay tuned.

Key Takeaways:

[8:16] Where did Lindsay originally learn about meditation?

[9:22] How did incorporating meditation into her daily practice change her lifestyle?

[11:25] Lindsay takes us through what floatation therapy is, the history behind it, and what you experience during it.

[13:50] How Floatation Center eases people’s fear of claustrophobia and feelings of nervousness with darkness.

[14:30] Are there any add-on elements or hacks to the floating?

[15:42] Does Lindsay and the Floatation Center team have any measurable outcomes that they look at that they’ve noticed with people who frequently engage with floating?

[17:32] How are people (that use her center regularly) leveraging it? What is the frequency of visits for the average visitor?

[18:39] Has Lindsay seen any shifts in people from an immune health perspective?

[19:39] How floatation therapy can be used to proactively benefit you.

[22:02] How else does Lindsay support her health outside of floating?

I had the real pleasure today of sitting down with a new health entrepreneur. Rachel Peterson has launched an online brand called Austin Paleo Grrl and has a new food product called We Bee Paleo — a paleo-friendly granola. And what is so cool about someone who has taken so many initiatives is that she’s really only been in the health world for the last two years.

This episode, Rachel shares with us a very personal journey that brought her to a place that forced her to make some very big and strategic decisions with her life. And what I find so inspiring about it is that she picked a journey that not only provided her with hope but is able to augment the health of other people along the way. Rachel is really honest about where she is at right now, the steps she is taking to be able to launch these new health initiatives, how she finds the balance between having a fulltime job while maintaining this other presence as her side hustle, and how she manages to maintain her own health throughout it all.

Rachel absolutely epitomizes the journey that we have all gone through as health entrepreneurs. This is a great interview for those who are looking to understand what it takes to move forward and all of the elements and all of the potential that is actually sitting in front of us.

[16:15] Has Rachel explored the ketogenic diet in her own health journey?

[18:03] Eat real food and listen to your body to figure out what works for you.

[19:07] More about Rachel’s entrepreneurial journey: What she’s currently working on right now and her plans for the future.

[21:11] The actual, actionable steps Rachel took with her business, We Bee Paleo, to move it forward.

[24:42] Did Rachel always know she was an entrepreneur?

[25:59] When does Rachel think she’ll know when she’s ready to leave her day job and take on her side hustle full-time?

[28:48] Does Rachel consider herself an extrovert?

[31:41] What is on Rachel’s health bucket list? What she is looking to explore health-wise in the future.

CALL TO ACTION

Apr 24, 2018

About 2½ years ago, I had the opportunity to work with an incredible woman while she was still a student in Toronto — Dr. Ashley Margeson. She graduated as a Naturopathic Doctor about 18 months ago, and what is truly amazing is that she’s really taken the world by storm. Now, I wasn’t surprised by this at all — but what I find so fascinating is to really delve into the journey she’s had since graduating. She has accomplished so much and has several initiatives on the go.

Ashley is an incredible entrepreneur whom I respect deeply; she is someone who has been consistent in her ability to try new things, be willing to fail, and confidently move forward while inspiring others.

This episode, we get into her hacks of entrepreneurism, how to get through the flights and expedite your sense of recovery when you land on the other side, how to keep going as a female entrepreneur and craft your environment to help support your momentum — as well as accelerating your growth! Ashley also shares the three important questions you need to ask yourself to help set yourself up for success and achieve your goals.

[7:34] How an IV therapy can help you before travel.

[9:51] How do we support women as entrepreneurs?

[12:50] Set yourself up for success by figuring out your answers to these three, important questions.

[27:04] How Ashley is crafting her environment to help support her momentum.

[29:26] About Ashley’s current initiatives and her views on persevering through failures.

Apr 17, 2018

I’ll be honest — it’s hard being an entrepreneur and having three kids. I think it’s hard being an entrepreneur and having any kids — but with three right now at 2, 4, and 6, there is chaos behind the scenes. Because of this, I tend to gravitate toward the female entrepreneurs on social media that seem to have found the balance between family and putting positive energy out into the universe as an entrepreneur.

And one of those such people is Dr. Rachel Schwartzman — a naturopathic doctor who practices here in Toronto. She has a series of initiatives out there in the world that are having a really tremendous, positive impact on families. She is one of the co-founders of West End Naturopathic Doulas where she is a naturopathic doctor working with families. She is also the co-creator to The Bump to Baby Show — a family-friendly event that really takes families through the journey of parenthood — from pregnancy, right into that young family phase.

We talked in this interview about entrepreneurism, how to manage picky eaters, common health misconceptions that are holding families back, and what Rachel is drinking right now to get her through this very busy time right now (two weeks before launch phase!) and how she keeps going on going as an entrepreneur.

Key Takeaways:

[4:00] About Rachel’s journey to becoming a naturopathic doctor.

[5:28] Was the naturopathic college Rachel attended what she had expected?

[6:57] Why Rachel loves working with and treating children.

Have you ever had this experience where you wake up and you feel like your body is out of control? Painful periods, hot flashes — your symptoms and your body feeling like they’re literally on fire? This is the story of my next guest.

Stacey Foat is a naturopathic physician from Australia and she takes us through her journey of recovering from debilitating symptoms related to hormonal imbalances. Stacey happened to be a naturopath when she started to experience these symptoms and was able to draw on her knowledge and overcome her diagnosis — reversing all of the debilitating symptoms simply through lifestyle changes and nutritional and herbal medicine.

Since then, Stacey has become incredibly passionate about talking about the upstream causes of hormonal disturbances, looking at ‘PMS’ premenstrual syndrome and breast cancer. She works hard to help hand women the power to control hormones through the decisions that they make every single day.

In this episode, Stacey shares things you can start to shift on a daily basis to gain control over those parts of your health that may or may not be signaling you to change.

Key Takeaways:

[1:53] Introduction to our guest today, Stacey Foat.

[4:23] Stacey takes us through her personal journey of how she became an advocate for women having control over their hormonal health.

[6:11] Why can’t we get more people to explore the opportunity to address the fundamental components of health that created the problem in the first place?

[7:00] Stacey’s feelings on the birth control pill.

[8:54] The notion of ‘common’ vs. ‘normal’; what women should or should not experience as they’re going through their monthly cycle.

[10:42] The alternative to the birth control pill: Stacey’s naturopathic 7-step healing system she uses to support clients in her clinic.

[15:50] Foods and drinks that perpetuate inflammation.

[16:48] Is moderation key in inflammatory foods and drinks?

[17:39] Beauty care products that raise red flags.

[19:27] The conversation we should all have about breast cancer prevention.

[23:52] The psychology work Stacey does with her clients related to hormonal imbalances.

[25:25] What is the ‘emotional freedom technique’?

[29:44] What Stacey would like her legacy to be.

[30:01] How Stacey defines health.

More About Stacey Foat

At age 27, Stacey was diagnosed as having commenced menopause, with no explanation as to why. Instead of admitting defeat, Stacey drew on her knowledge as a Naturopath and was able to overcome her diagnosis by addressing the underlying causes. Six months later she had completely reversed all the debilitating symptoms simply through lifestyle changes and nutritional and herbal medicine.

Since then, Stacey developed a burning desire to help women suffering from the same issues and has developed several programs that are meant to meld with your lifestyle; allowing you to follow along in your own time and space.

How many of you have thought of mindfulness? Meditation, yoga — all of those core buzzwords — as not just acts of relaxation, but acts of leadership. This is the stance of my guest today, Paula Pyne. Paula is a consultant in the mindfulness space and her stance on the matter is that all of these elements — all of these things that cause us to focus on ourselves and who we are and to slow down — are not just tools to help accelerate the success of teams and new startups but are also acts of personal leadership.

[15:57] How the platform of leadership is shifting and what we need to do, as women, to help step into it.

[17:26] How do we gather the courage to start making change in our lives and take action?

[21:20] The challenge as a leader of creating an environment that respects patients while also remaining amply competitive in the business space.

[26:47] Paula’s advice to the young, bold, ambitious individuals that need to work on their leadership development before diving head-first into a project or career.

Today’s guest is a Naturopathic doctor who practices here in Ontario. What is so fundamentally unique about what she has built is that her business is founded upon the notion of intention and female empowerment. Dr. Michelle Peris leads her business initiatives and entrepreneurial spirit from intent, her spirit, and what feels right in a way and with a bravery that I wish more people would look at and embrace. I was nervous for this one. I fancy myself as a pretty decent communicator, but there is nothing like inviting a communication consultant, to put that confidence to the test. Mary Shores is the author of Conscious Communications and has been working as a CEO and serious badass for the last 20 years. Her interest in language is not relegated to simply one’s vocabulary, she is equally fascinated with the neurological implications of tone and intonation. Seriously cool stuff.

Mary teaches people how to harness the power of words to change their own  mindset and the mindset of those around them. This was a super-fascinating conversation because all of us are in a position of influence — all of us are out there trying to change the world on a daily basis. If we don’t have our words to back us up, we miss out on the opportunity for greater impact.

Key Takeaways:

[3:08] About Mary Shores’ journey and how she developed an interest and curiosity in the power of communication.

[4:08] Mary’s process in coaching others in conscious communication.

[5:15] What Mary considers a negative word and her tips on how to replace these negative words.

[7:03] How do we say ‘no’ when it is appropriately respecting our boundaries and not shutting down things emotionally?

[9:20] How to harness the power of Mary’s teaching while setting out to embark on your goals and resolutions in the new year.

[10:57] Mary’s process for getting people to see what they’re grateful for.

[13:07] What is happening on a neurological basis when we engage in negative self-talk.

[15:55] The power of affirmations and why sometimes people are resistant to them.

[19:32] The important tool that is journaling and the key to patience.

[22:25] Tools in communication that Mary uses in her own life.

[24:25] Questioning the systems we create that evaluate a person’s success.

[25:20] The communication styles in adults that make Mary cringe.

[26:11] Challenge yourself to go on a complaint diet!

[27:44] The business side of things: the things leaders need to keep in mind when communicating with their team.

[31:35] How Mary transitioned from being a communication specialist to compiling everything she learned into her book.

[37:09] What Mary would like her legacy to be.

Have you ever wondered if everything is determined by your genes or if you have some element of control at all? There’s a 50/50 split with all patients sitting in my office; half of them really wish that they could explain all the things that are awry in their life and health through their genes, and the other half are begging for the opportunity to garner more control. The reality is: The truth lies somewhere in the middle. And that’s what we talked about today with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald.

Dr. Fitzgerald is a naturopathic doctor that I was absolutely thrilled to have on my podcast. She has extensive knowledge on the concept of epigenetics; the things we can do to change our predetermined D.N.A. and in this episode, we got into simple hacks that you can use on a daily basis to shift your entrepreneurial mindset, increase your energy, and improve your overall health. You definitely don’t want to miss this one!

[9:50] What is Dr. Kara Fitzgerald’s primary focus from a consumer perspective?

[12:10] The interesting case of adults reacting with an immediate hypersensitivity to foods they’ve never reacted to before.

[18:38] What epigenetics is and why we all should care about it.

[24:00] Are there things that we do on a daily basis that we should or shouldn’t do that have a profound effect on the epigenetic environment within your body?

[34:30] Do you think people can do it with diet and lifestyle alone or do they need supplementation?

[38:14] Dr. Kara Fitzgerald recommendations to entrepreneurs to add to their list of habits every day.
