Two years ago, someone asked me what supplements I take to maintain my health, energy, and edge — and they were surprised that I only took four things consistently. For myself and my patients, there are four basics that support — at a foundational level — nearly every system in our bodies. In my quest for the highest quality ingredients and the easiest system for consistently incorporating supplementation into my routine, I formulated and manufactured my own line of foundational supplements. She is super interested in the strategic decisions and actions that we can take every single day to fully optimize our health.

Recently, a question I was asked on our Facebook group caught my eye and stopped me in my tracks. The question was: “Is there any hope as an ND in Ontario that I will ever make more than $100,000 a year by playing by the rules?”

What we’re going to do in today’s episode is break this question down. We’re going to uncover the root cause of what’s really behind that question. What it means on a big picture level, what it means on the ground, and what the six years of working with clinicians  — helping them to build out their businesses  — has taught me about the model that we are all trying to deploy. We have been taught that a 1:1 model is the best and only way to deliver care. But do patients actually want this model of care?

We’re going to focus on the problems, the challenges, and the broken elements of delivering naturopathic care, functional medicine, and strategic care in a preventative context. Even if you are not a clinician, I still highly encourage you to listen in to this episode! We will be exploring this overarching idea of crafting an offer that our customers actually want. This can be applied to any business — but especially with delivering strategic care.

“If you want to change your life, you need to change the way you are thinking about your life. If you want to change your practice, you need to change the way you practice. And if we want to reach more people without sacrificing ourselves in the process, we need to change the way we have always done it.” — Meghan Walker

Key Takeaways:

[:43] About today’s important episode.

[4:00] The reality of the 1:1 model of care… and why it doesn’t work for all (or even most) patients.

[6:40] My value proposition as a practitioner and how we can help more people not by lowering our prices, but by innovating our offer.

[7:40] The smarter, less expensive, more efficient way of delivering information so that we can focus on delivering strategies to our patients.

[9:10] The Biopsychosocial model of care.

[9:50] The delivery of transformational care vs. transactional care.

[10:28] The beautiful thing about stepping into transformational care.

[10:57] What we need to acknowledge as 1:1 practitioners: what is our unique selling proposition? What differentiates us from Dr. Google?

[12:06] What I’ve noticed with patients in my own practice that were not ready for or did not want 1:1 care.

[13:40] The four stages of readiness that a patient moves through on their journey to health and why we need to be crafting more than one offer (beyond 1:1 care).

[17:35] The first stage of readiness: the aspirational stage (and what we can deliver care to these types of individuals).

[20:15] The second stage of readiness: the empowerment phase (AKA the DIY phase), and what we can do to assist these patients.

[22:32] The third stage of readiness: the strategy phase and what you can do to help them move the needle on their health.

[25:08] The fourth and final stage of readiness: the growth phase — and how to keep your patients well (and not returning to your doors one year later with the same symptoms).

[27:30] The tremendous shift we have seen over the last year (in the era of COVID-19) on how care is being delivered.

[29:17] Why it is so important — more than ever — to have a hybrid practice.

[32:05] My final answer to today’s question.

It’s officially March! The sun is shining, spring is in the air… and you know what that means: it’s the perfect time to talk about money! But don’t be scared off — we’re going to help you take control of finances! We’re talking personal empowerment, stepping into our “money power,” and the systems that we can begin to incorporate into our businesses so that we can take control of the financial part of our lives (and health) once and for all!

My guest today, April Stroink, is a profit-first certified practitioner. She works with small business owners to help them develop systems within their businesses so that their finances do not control them and they can truly move towards the state of freedom that all entrepreneurs desire.

In order to ultimately achieve solid health, we need to have a system that helps us manage our wealth. And more often than not, finances are a core source of stress. Mar 2, 2021

2020 was a doozy but the silver lining to it was that it really was this incredible opportunity for all of us to build resilience — resilience both psychologically and physiologically.

But what does resilience really mean? And not as this esoteric, beautiful quote on Instagram; but in real life. What are the tools one would need to deploy in their own life so that when tragedy strikes they have the capacity to handle it on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level? How do we build resilience into our lives so that it’s available to us when we need it most? How do we strengthen our resilience in order to come out of situations seeing the silver lining, the lessons, and being able to integrate that experience in a healthy way?

Joining me to answer all of these questions is Dr. Tara Guzzo; a Naturopathic Doctor, friend, and expert on the idea of resilience! In our conversation together, Dr. Tara shares a really compelling story of how her own need to overcome and integrate resilience led to the starting point of building out an incredible approach to resilience in her own practice. Not only does she share tips for building and strengthening resilience, but we also get into biohacking, mindset practices, and much, much more! I can’t wait for you to join us!

Key Takeaways:

[1:13] About today’s episode with Dr. Tara Guzzo!

[3:10] Welcoming Dr. Tara to the podcast!

[3:33] Dr. Tara shares her backstory, how she’s gotten to this place in her career, and why she is so passionate about this notion of resilience!

[7:42] Prior to this experience Dr. Tara went through, had she appreciated the connection between health and resilience in the same way that she does now? Or did this experience shift her perspective in understanding this in a completely new way?

[9:37] Dr. Tara’s definition of what physical and emotional resilience is and looks like.

[10:15] How do we build resilience in the absence of trauma?

[13:05] What is the “reward” for putting in the work for building resilience?

[14:52] Are men more resilient than women?

[15:19] Why is Dr. Tara so passionate about exploring resilience in women in particular?

[17:26] Dr. Tara provides practical strategies that you can use in the moment to build resilience, strengthen resilience, and be resilient.

[22:09] What good physiological resilience looks like.

[23:23] Markers that Dr. Tara looks for as a clinician to determine if someone has good or poor physiological resilience.

[24:29] Has Dr. Tara ever leveraged continuous glucose monitoring for looking at resilience?

[25:55] Heart rate variability and the abundance of research behind this marker as an indicator of resilience in the body.

[28:32] What Dr. Tara has seen in her practice as being highly effective in raising the HRV scores of her patients.

[31:03] Tangible tips and habits you can implement today that will move the needle on your resilience and HRV scores.
