Speaking of business, badass, and inner-balance — today’s guest has it all. Ariel Garten is a neuroscientist, innovator, mother, and an entrepreneur who’s driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and help them reach their maximum potential.

Ariel is the founder of InteraXon — the makers of Muse, the meditation headband. And they’re a Canadian company! Muse is an award-winning, wearable technology that assists and trains meditation and mindfulness. Muse takes the guesswork out of meditation. It’s used by thousands of people daily, with over five million meditation sessions to-date.

Ariel was an incredible guest. Not only was she articulate and understanding of the ecosystem of entrepreneurship, but she was incredibly insightful as to the tools that we have available to us to help us accelerate our capacity to think, gain clarity, and have big-picture thoughts as it pertains to entrepreneurism. What made her so perfect for the Entrepology podcast was that we digressed from these big-picture ideas to then look at what it means to be a mother, to have balance — and how we throw all of these things together and still continue to create incredible businesses and solutions in the world.

More About Ariel Garten

Ariel Garten is a neuroscientist, innovator, mother, and entrepreneur whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential. Garten is the Founder of InteraXon, the makers of Muse: the brain sensing headband. Muse is the award-winning wearable technology that assists and trains meditation and mindfulness. Muse takes the guesswork out of meditation by giving you real-time feedback of your brain so you see what’s going on in your mind while you meditate, therefore allowing you learn how to truly achieve a deep state of focus and increase mindfulness. Hundreds of thousands of people use Muse daily, with over five million meditations sessions with Muse to date.

Ariel has always been creative in multiple fields, spanning both the arts and the sciences. Before founding InteraXon, Ariel was not only trained as a neuroscientist and psychotherapist but also started her own international clothing line while she worked in labs researching Parkinson’s disease and hippocampal neurogenesis. Her entrepreneurial head combined with her fascination with the brain and curiosity to find tangible ways to improve it lead her to join forces with two of her friends where they founded a Silicon-Valley-backed startup that allowed people to control computers with their minds, the technology that led to Muse. These days, Ariel can be found at home playing with her two-year-old or on stage across the world speaking about happiness, meditation, understanding mental health, or telling her own innovation story, consistently giving her audiences the tools they need to help them become their best selves.

Ariel is determined to help as many people as possible undo the knots in their heads and ultimately to help people understand their brains better in order to lead their best lives, free of all the limiting beliefs that stand in their way. Ariel’s journey is an inspiration — a crazy technology company that has been amazingly successful. She’s never let her negative thoughts get in the way and her mission is to be able to empower others to do the same!

CALL TO ACTION

You don’t need Muse to start meditating today (though it sure is helpful!) If you’re new to meditating or have never meditated, try meditating for a small amount each day. Start with 3 minutes, then go to 5, then go to 10. Like Ariel said, even 10 minutes a day consistently has profound effects. And remember to share your commitment on the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page! Because when you are accountable, you are helpable.

Today’s guest is someone I met through a mutual friend when I mentioned I wanted to explore the concept of the hero’s journey on the podcast. My friend knew just who to connect with me. When I checked out the website of Dr. Chris Zaino, the first thing that I saw was a quote from him that said, “I liberate heroes.”

Dr. Zaino is a chiropractor and has walked the hero’s journey. As a Mr. America in 1998, he thought he was on top of the world until a deadly disease set him back. His own personal experience is what gives him the power and the fuel to change people’s lives the way he has. He’s built enormous practices and has now shifted away to be able to work with people one-on-one to help them free the hero that resides in them. He helps people reach their full potential, and he’s going to do the same for you.

Key Takeaways:

[1:24] About our guest today, Dr. Chris Zaino.

[2:38] Welcoming Dr. Chris Zaino to the podcast!

[18:20] How Dr. Zaino helps fellow practitioners tap into a similar purpose and passion?

[21:53] Dr. Zaino’s process to get people to connect to their noble qualities and unique abilities.

[24:00] How Dr. Zaino learned to embrace his hero.

[30:08] When Dr. Zaino started the I Am Hero project and how it has — and can — help others.

[30:58] Learning to do things for you and satisfying the depths of your inner desires rather than from the outside world.

[34:46] As Dr. Zaino discovered this hero side of himself, what were the superpowers he gained or found?

[40:30] Who inspires Dr. Zaino?

[41:34] How Dr. Zaino defines health.

[43:25] Dr. Zaino’s key performance indicators!

About 20 years ago someone handed me a book about women’s health and naturopathic medicine, by Carolyn Dean. I found this book profound — so profound in fact that I made the decision that I would study naturopathic medicine. And here we are now, nearly 20 years later, and I have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Carolyn Dean.

Carolyn Dean is a medical doctor who went back and studied naturopathic medicine and now practices in New York. She is a prolific author, researcher, and commenter on trends with respect to medicine.

One of her areas of expertise that she is most passionate about is understanding the role of magnesium in the body. As she explains in this interview, magnesium has over 800 functions in the body and — in her opinion — is one of the most common areas of deficiency. In fact, many of the chronic diseases we are medicated for in our healthcare system may actually be deficiencies in magnesium. This very simple mineral can have profound, lasting effects on your health! This interview is fascinating, in-depth — and is for anyone that is human!

Key Takeaways:

[1:55] About my guest today, Carolyn Dean.

[4:04] Welcoming Carolyn Dean to the podcast!

[4:30] How and why Carolyn made the transition from medical doctor to naturopath.

[14:21] The advice Carolyn would give to new practitioners in terms of self-care.

[16:47] What was it that got Carolyn interested in magnesium?

[22:53] How magnesium can have a profound effect on chronic diseases.

[25:06] Is magnesium more important than other minerals? Where does it fit in context?

[28:02] Is a calcium magnesium supplement insufficient as a magnesium supplement?

[29:55] What should you be looking for when purchasing a magnesium supplement?

[32:50] Are there side effects of supplementing on magnesium?

[36:50] Is there any indication when to switch from magnesium orally to topically?

[43:35] What Dr. Dean would like her legacy to be.

[47:10] Dr. Dean’s key-performance indicators.

[53:40] Where to find Carolyn online!

Dr. Carolyn Dean’s magnesium supplements (ReMag)

Dr. Jack Kruse’s books (Amazon)

More About Carolyn Dean

Dr. Dean is not only a medical doctor, but also a naturopath, herbalist, acupuncturist, nutritionist, lecturer, consultant, author, inventor, and entrepreneur. Dr. Dean has been at the forefront of health issues for over 30 years.

She graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1978, holds a medical license in California and is a graduate of The Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine – now the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto. She served on the board of Governors of the CCNM for six years.

After writing about magnesium deficiency for over 15 years, Dr. Dean had encouraged magnesium companies to make a fully absorbed magnesium product instead of the medical recommendation for magnesium oxide which is only 4% absorbed. Finally, she realized she had to accomplish this task herself and created ReMag® which is 100% absorbed at the cellular level in its stabilized ionic form. Thus, nothing is lost to the laxative effect. Then, she went on to create more RnA ReSet formulas of the highest quality, which are fully absorbed at the cellular level and give the body the building blocks it needs in order to maintain optimal health.

Jul 10, 2018

A few years ago, Arianna Huffington famously said, “To be effective, you need to sleep your way to the top.” What she was talking about is not what you’re thinking — it is, however, exactly what she said! You need to sleep.

What I want to talk to you today is not about how you sleep or who you sleep with but how you literally outplay your competition. Today we’ve got a solo episode — so you’re stuck with me! And I thought, on the brink of summer, there is nothing better than to discuss than the physiological importance of — what for it — play! Play is massively important to your health and frankly, your life.

In this episode I explain why play is so important and how this shift in mindset to prioritize can help you become a results-driven entrepreneur opposed to a time-trading entrepreneur.

Key Takeaways:

[1:24] All about our solo episode today.

[3:17] Why we tend to neglect play and why we shouldn’t.

[5:41] One of the concepts that got me to actively engage in play.

[6:49] The many forms play can take as an adult.

[7:21] The interesting framework of games and how it’s the perfect construction to turn on specific physiological pathways.

[10:10] How cortisol and dopamine affect us as entrepreneurs.

[13:05] How we can get our dopamine outside of work.

[14:28] How video games can be the perfect dopamine fix and lower cortisol levels (within specific stipulations).

[17:50] How play not only positively impacts our day-to-day physiology but our longitudinal physiology as well.

[18:17] My two challenges to you!

Today’s interview was super practical. I had the pleasure of interviewing an incredible entrepreneur, Kimmye Bohannon. She is one of the founders of The Weekly Juicery. Kimmye has completely made it in the juicing industry and built a fabulous business by being steadfast in acknowledging that she is not there to make things taste good, but to make you feel amazing. She has been consistent in setting the highest possible standard in terms of what she creates and puts out there.

This episode we get right into the nitty-gritty of juicing. We talk about the benefits of juicing vs. smoothies vs. just eating your vegetables whole. We also talked all about how to take the grinds, fiber, and clean up — all the components of juicing that dissuade us — and turn them into some really incredible ideas in your kitchen. If you’ve ever looked at juicing and tried to understand how it helps you and how to include it in your weekly routine — then this interview is for you!

Key Takeaways:

[1:33] All about my guest today, Kimmye Bohannon.

[3:07] Welcoming Kimmye to the podcast!

[3:28] Kimmye’s background leading up to her current career.

[7:43] How does Kimmye’s business keep growing in the crowded juice market?

[10:25] Kimmye breaks down the differences between smoothies and juices.

[12:44] Kimmye speaks about the latest ingredients in juices and defends the bad rep juices sometimes get.

[16:40] What is an adaptogen?

[20:31] What do home-juicers need to know? Kimmye’s beginner juicing recommendations.

[23:19] How long can you keep your juice in the fridge for? Is there a way to extend a juice’s lifespan?

[27:27] Quick tips for using the leftovers from the juice.

[28:02] Kimmye’s journey as an entrepreneur; how she got to where she is today.

Kimmye Bohannon is an avid juice drinker and the Founder and CEO of The Weekly Juicery and The Juice Ritual program. She started The Weekly Juicery in her home in 2012 as a juice delivery service with a goal of making cold-pressed juices convenient for busy people.

The Weekly Juicery juices are 100% USDA Certified Organic, vegetable-centric with little to no fruit. The juices are raw with no preservation technique like HPP to extend the shelf life.
