It’s that time of the year! It’s just after Christmas, so I figured this episode would be perfect to focus on — and explore — some new ideas moving into the new year.

Every year, I pick a word that is going to summarize my intention for the following year. In 2018, my word was growth, and as I reflect back on this year I realize we created so many new initiatives that are about growth — not just growing now, but into the future. We truly were able to live up to the intention that I set. Going into 2019, I decided to set my intentions on a new word: momentum. Momentum is something that I find incredibly powerful and important in both health and in business and is crucial in continuing to drive that growth we created in 2018.

So, in this episode, I’m taking you through my list of things that I will be taking with me into the new year to maximize my momentum, as well as the three powerful questions I ask in my practice to help others maximize their potential, as well.

Key Takeaways:

[:15] The focus of today’s solo episode: exploring new ideas moving into 2019!

[1:06] Reflecting on my intentions for 2018 and setting my intentions for 2019.

[4:10] The two important questions we need to ask ourselves to ensure momentum.

[5:11] How do we maintain, initiate, or drive momentum in our lives?

[6:51] The first question I ask: what activities do you do that fuel your life?

[8:38] The second question to ask yourself: address the things that suck the life force from you!

[10:09] The secret sauce to driving momentum!

[11:45] My list of the nine things I’m going to change in 2019 to maximize momentum.

[22:14] What are you putting in place to drive momentum in your life? Let’s continue this conversation on Instagram and Facebook!

I always find it fascinating to take a look at what people who are highly evolved in their careers have done — where the commonalities exist for them. I ask about this and observe this in my practice with my patients and I thoroughly enjoy exploring these themes on the podcast. One of the things that I’ve started to observe is the common practice among those who are executing at the highest level: exercise and meditation.

It comes as no surprise that I encounter more and more evolved, badass women building incredibly impactful businesses that I’m starting to see that meditation not only rises to the surface — but it becomes the calling for these women, in and of itself.

My guest today, Suze Yalof Schwartz, is the leader of Unplug Meditation. She has a studio, a book, an app, and a really exciting 30-day challenge (that we’re going to explore on today’s podcast)! Most excitingly, she has a story of how she went from being a makeover guru amongst the top fashion magazines to running a studio that completely transforms the way that we think.

Suze has incredible insight, not only as an entrepreneur but as someone who has committed to the daily practice of meditation. By the end of this podcast, not only will you leave with tools, you’ll leave with a newfound respect and curiosity of what meditation can do for you in your own life.

Key Takeaways:

[1:57] About today’s guest, Suze Yalof Schwartz.

[3:40] Welcoming Suze to the podcast!

[4:27] Suze takes us through her journey and how she has gotten to where she is today.

[6:03] How Suze was launched into her journey of giving meditation a “makeover.”

[10:41] How Suze helps people feel the power of meditation.

[11:47] How Suze gets through to the skeptics of meditation.

[12:43] Suze provides an exercise on how to interrupt stressful thoughts (i.e. the first step to practicing meditation).

[16:18] How much time should people be dedicating to meditation in a day?

[17:46] What is taught at Suze’s Unplug meditation classes.

[20:17] How Suze leverages the power of aromatherapy in her studio.

[22:50] Suze speaks about the journey of creating her app and her recommendations for those wanting to start their own app.

[25:45] Why Suze built the app and about the 30-day meditation challenge.

[28:05] Technology that Suze uses to support her meditation and mindfulness practices.

[28:35] The impact meditation has had on Suze as an entrepreneur.

[29:35] What does Suze want her legacy to be?

[32:30] Suze’s key performance indicators!

[38:19] Where to learn more about what Suze is up to!

More About Suze Yalof Schwartz

Suze Yalof Schwartz is the founder and CEO of Unplug Meditation, the world's first drop-in secular meditation studio. She is also the author of Unplug: A Simple Guide To Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers, and the creator of the Unplug Meditation App.

In 2012, Suze learned a three-minute meditation that changed her life forever. Prior to this, she was a fashion editor and "makeover guru" working at Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour Magazine with regular appearances on GMA, The Today Show, CBS Early Show, and more. Once she discovered meditation, she was determined to keep doing it but she could not find a place to easily learn and practice. After taking hundreds of hours of classes, reading every book possible, and listening to podcasts and lectures from the world’s most famous meditation teachers, Suze realized that meditation needed a makeover and she was the one to do it.

Suze’s mission is to make meditation simple, accessible, powerful and interesting enough so that everyone will want to practice it and experience the benefits for themselves.

I connected with today’s guest almost immediately after meeting her. We bonded over the notion of badass women and our capacity to invoke positive change in the world. Diana Lane is a fascinating healer; she’s a stress-reduction specialist, holistic health expert, esoteric healer, and acupuncturist. And what’s so cool about her history and her tools as a healer is that she did not start out this way. Her journey had her starting out on a traditional path, studying pre-med, with ambitions to become a cardiovascular surgeon.

Diana’s journey and the influences in her life that caused her to change course, in turn, have caused thousands of people to be impacted from her positive message and her true belief that women have a sacred capacity to contribute. Diana has a lot to say on the subject of who we are as women and our power to influence society because of our innate female skills — so tune in and learn about how you can harness the power of your menstrual cycle and fully tap into your body!

[23:36] Diana explains what PMS for men is (aka preMANstrual syndrome).

[25:36] How Diana helps those who come to her practice manage stress.

I’ve been trying to get today’s guest on for a loooong time! Dr. Tyna Moore is a naturopathic doctor, and chiropractor, and success coach for fellow N.D.s looking to amplify their impact in the world. Needless to say, she and I are on a similar mission and are really aligned in how we enjoy helping people. Her expertise, however, when it comes to clinical care, is different than mine. She is an expert in pain management and has an intuitive sense in terms of understanding where pain originates in the body. Very often, what she observes is that pain is an issue with the central nervous system — and in particular, inflammation in the brain. And what was so fascinating about our conversation today was looking at the applicability of that idea as it pertains to those of us who may be suffering from chronic pain issues.

In this episode, we really explore the connection between the mind and the physical manifestations that we have in our body, and some of the really cool, regenerative injection therapies that are available to us as consumers of better health care.

Key Takeaways:

[1:24] About today’s episode and guest!

[2:48] Welcoming Dr. Tyna Moore to the podcast!

[3:15] Tyna tells us all about her story and journey.

[7:30] Commonalities Tyna notices in terms of the source of their physical pain.

[9:30] Tyna explains how inflammation occurs in the brain.

[14:30] Some of the basics about regenerative injection therapy.

[16:03] How Tyna manages to keep her stress low.

[19:15] How to know when to ask your primary health care provider about regenerative injection therapy, and the main differences between prolotherapy and PRP.

[23:53] Who may not be a good candidate for regenerative injection therapy?

[27:19] Are there certain diets that help expedite the relief from pain faster than others?

[28:56] Tyna’s experience with the opposite spectrums of diet: keto vs. vegan.

[32:12] Tyna talks about the critical importance of building muscle mass.

[39:00] What Tyna would like her legacy to be.

[42:25] Tyna’s key performance indicators!

More About Tyna Moore

Dr. Tyna Moore is the Owner of Core Wellness Clinic in Portland, OR. She specializes exclusively in the application of natural pain solutions and regenerative injection therapies. As both a board-certified Naturopathic and Chiropractic physician, she brings a unique perspective and expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of pain and orthopedic conditions. Dr. Moore practices exclusively Regenerative Injection Therapies and non-surgical pain management for orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions.

Throughout her professional career, Dr. Tyna Moore has focused on pain and musculoskeletal conditions. It was her own illnesses as a child that inspired her to pursue medicine. She was fortunate enough to begin working with her mentor, Dr. Rick Marinelli, N.D., just out of undergrad as part of his office staff. Having battled her own chronic pain issues and injuries in the past, as well as seeing Dr. Marinelli’s work in action, Dr. Moore knows first-hand how potent a treatment natural regenerative injection therapies can be.

Dr. Moore attended both Western States Chiropractic College and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine concurrently, where she earned both her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree (N.D.) and Doctor of Chiropractic degree (D.C.) respectively.

If I were to ask you your greatest fear in the world, statistics tell me that aside from death, most of you would likely answer public speaking. While the connection between public speaking and health isn’t necessarily in focus for all of us right away, what I hear behind the scenes at my practice is that powerful women (on big missions to change the world!) eventually butt up against the need to publicly speak. It scares them and induces anxiety, and they end up avoiding the next right step in their business.

So, it is my pleasure to introduce this week’s guest, Johanna Walker. She is a speaking coach and is known as the fear-blasting, storytelling maven for coaches, consultants, leaders, and change-makers. She’s the founder of Women Who Speak, a transformational speaker coaching program for female leaders, and she’s the co-founder and co-host of Boulder, Colorado’s popular bi-monthly story slam series, Truth Be Told.

In this incredibly insightful episode with Johanna, we speak all about gaining the confidence to connect to your story and share it with others in a public setting, getting comfortable with being “judged,” how to be authentically vulnerable, and how to leverage the power of storytelling as an entrepreneur.

Key Takeaways:

[1:43] About my guest for today, Johanna Walker.

[3:19] Welcoming Johanna to the podcast!

[4:15] Johanna’s powerful story.

[9:13] Where Johanna thinks the shared experience of women not wanting to speak up or struggling to share their voice comes from.

[10:30] The first step Johanna takes with women wanting to connect with their story and having the confidence to share it.

[11:48] The process Johanna uses to help others tap into their story.

[15:33] Confronting the fear of being judged while public speaking.

[18:41] When did Johanna really connect to your confidence?

[23:05] Has Johanna ever received judgmental feedback?

[24:39] Johanna takes us through the structure of effective storytelling.

[27:55] How to be, and seem, authentically vulnerable in your story.

You may have guessed that I have a little thing for entrepreneurs — and I’m especially excited about the idea of women doing really badass things in this industry. My guest today is Justyna Kozlowska — the founder of NAGI, a Canadian company that makes really incredible nutritionally balanced energy bars and snacks.

What I absolutely love about what Justyna’s story is that she was just this person who consistently took the right next step. She was a health and fitness expert and was frustrated that she couldn’t find foods that were consistently clean and aligned with how she wanted to work with her clients. And like most entrepreneurs, rather than going out and looking for it, she decided she was just going to make it herself. That’s how the NAGI energy bar was born. These bars are raw, organic, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free — and here’s the kicker: they’re actually delicious.

Justyna’s story is truly a beacon of inspiration so I’ll hope you’ll join us this episode to hear all about her journey, the health and power behind her bars, and learn how you can also fiercely tap into your entrepreneurial spirit and join her in creating what you crave.

Key Takeaways:

[1:44] Introducing my guest for today, Justyna Kozlowska.

[3:29] Welcoming Justyna to the podcast!

[3:57] Justyna’s journey to creating her product.

There’s really nothing worse than feeling completely confident going into a situation and then at the very last minute realizing you likely have the worst breath in the world! Today’s guest, Ryan Nolan, is a Dental Materials Scientist. And what I love about Ryan’s story and what I enjoyed so much about this interview is the beautiful intersection between medicine and entrepreneurship that perfectly encapsulates what The Entrepology Podcast is all about.

An important ‘aha’ moment in his career came for him late at night when doing research at his apartment and it dawned on him that silver could penetrate plaque and he hypothesized: what if we could leverage silver to get calcium through biofilm so that we could actually increase the health of the enamel in the mouth? And guess what? His hypothesis ended up being correct! This launched him into a career learning more about biofilms, plaque, and the intersection between what’s happening in our mouth and its systemic influences on our health.

In this episode we go way beyond bad breath and talk about oral care in a way you’ve never been taught before. You’ll never forget to brush your teeth again.

Key Takeaways:

[1:59] About today’s episode with my guest, Ryan Nolan!

[4:21] Ryan Nolan’s background and journey on how he got to where he is today.

[6:35] What is a biofilm?

[7:37] Ancestral patterns that show how teeth have evolved and how we should care for them.

[10:35] Are Ryan and other researchers seeing associations between the oral microbiome and gut microbiome?

[13:34] The types of patterns Ryan sees in terms of dysfunction in the mouth and the systemic effects they could have.

[17:42] How salivary hormones play a role in our health.

[20:41] Ryan explains some cutting-edge, progressive dental evaluations and what we can do better, ourselves, to care for our teeth.

[29:41] Is there a way to whiten our teeth without destroying our oral microbiome?

[31:16] Ryan explains oil pulling and the research behind it.

[33:22] Do we really need to see our dentist every six months?

[36:52] In terms of our own oral hygiene, what kind of tips does Ryan give his own patients?

[42:11] Ryan’s views on fluoride.

[51:17] Ryan’s key performance indicators!

[56:14] Where to follow-up with Ryan and learn more about what he’s up to.

Diet and oral hygiene both play a role in optimal oral health! Just working on eliminating some of the refined sugars you may have in your diet, aiming to dental floss once more per week than you already do, keeping up with your twice-a-year dentist visits, and eating lots of blueberries (and drinking green tea and sugar-free pomegranate juice), can be VERY beneficial! All these small things add up to eliminate plaque and create a healthier oral microbiome. There’s nothing like challenging our inner badass than having a dysfunction in our pelvic floor. And today we’re going to talk all about it (and more!) with my guest, Chana Ross. Chana is a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist and the owner of Vital Physiotherapy and Wellness here in Toronto, Canada. She is an absolute expert in her field and she is going to give us the low-down on what we need to know about our pelvic floor and what we can do about improving it!

While it’s easy to joke about the leakage that may occur while performing certain tasks or while playing with your kids, it is sad to me that most of us are not given the opportunity to rehabilitate our bodies and connect with them the way we could if we were working with a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist. I wish for every woman not to have to wear big, plastic underwear in order to feel confident in leaving her house — and instead be able to handle that situation themselves.

So today we’re getting the lowdown on pelvic floor physio — what you need to know, what you can do about it, and the signs and symptoms that you need to be aware of!

Key Takeaways:

[1:39] About today’s episode and guest!

[3:38] Welcoming Chana Ross to the podcast!

[4:34] Chana Ross’s story and how she became a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist.

[6:09] How long Chana has been running her business for and how it is different than Chana’s previous experience as a practitioner.

[8:37] How people’s lives can be changed when they work with a pelvic floor physio.

[11:11] Some of the obvious symptoms of a dysfunctional pelvic floor.

[14:28] Should people be seeing a pelvic floor physio before they have a baby?

[16:17] What’s the experience like when you go for pelvic floor physiotherapy?

[20:40] The role your core plays in terms of your pregnancy and your pelvic floor.

[24:46] What happens if you don’t focus early on healing your pelvic floor.

[26:52] The stigma around seeking help for pelvic floor dysfunction.

[28:14] What kind of training should people be looking for when they are assessing the credentials of a practitioner that can assess and help them in relation to their pelvic floor?

[30:38] What does Chana want her legacy to be?

[31:14] How does Chana define health?

My guest today is up to something very cool! We met each other at an event that I was speaking at a few months ago and when Angela Kelly and I introduced ourselves to each other and I asked her what she did, she said that she was a cricket entrepreneur. And to say the least, I was intrigued. I had only eaten cricket once before in the form of a protein bar when I was 4 months pregnant.

I was totally curious how this woman was not only interested in and came upon crickets, but how she was building an entire business out of it! Well, Angela shares all of that with us today. We not only talk about the health benefits of crickets — but we also talk about the steps you need to take to actually launch a food product. And what’s so cool about this is that we talk specifically about how Toronto is an excellent center and has incredible resources for those who have really cool food products they want to bring to the market.

This podcast hits all of the marks on everything that’s important to us here at Entrepology: health, entrepreneurship, and badassery — because frankly, eating bugs is the most badass things I’ve ever heard of.

Key Takeaways:

[1:42] About my guest today, Angela Kelly.

[3:17] Welcoming Angela to the podcast!

[3:42] Angela gives us some background on what it means to be a cricket entrepreneur.

[5:17] Where did the consumption of insects originate?

[6:30] How do you cook with crickets?

[8:00] Why do we have such a block towards cooking with insects? And how Angela helps people get past the “ick” factor.

[9:35] Do “whole-roasted crickets” look like full crickets?

[10:29] What crickets taste like.

[10:50] Angela talks about the environmental benefits of consuming crickets.

[14:05] My first cricket tasting experience.

[14:45] About the cricket products Angela offers.

[16:04] What component of the cricket helps reduce inflammation in the gut?

[16:45] How a cricket entrepreneur is similar to being a naturopathic doctor.

[17:22] How Angela positioned her innovative product to get it in front of consumers.

[19:35] Angela takes us through her journey as a food entrepreneur.

[23:25] Where to purchase Angela’s products.

[24:19] What has been the hardest part of launching her business?

[25:40] Does Angela think there are other insects that will also rise in popularity similarly to crickets?

More About Angela Kelly

Angela Kelly is the founder and CEO of Fit Cricket Nutrition, based in Toronto, Ontario. Her product, Fit Cricket Nutrition, is cricket-based nutrition in the form of protein bars and cricket powder. Not only are crickets healthy for you — they’re healthy for the planet too!

As Angela explains, “They offer a sustainable and complete protein and a lot of it! Most plant-based proteins are incomplete and need to be paired with other proteins to get the full amino acid spectrum the body needs, whereas crickets already contain all 9 essential amino acids.” Cricket powder provides almost 3x the amount of protein than beef, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, contains a perfect Omega-6 to -3 ratio for the human body, and is a great source of fiber and Vitamin B12. Crickets also promote an optimal microbiome! They’re also very sustainable; if one family of four ate insect protein once a week over the span of a year they would save the planet 650,000L of fresh water.

Fit Cricket Protein Bars are 10g of protein in just a 50g serving size using cricket powder as our second ingredient (of only 8) so you are really reaping the nutritional benefits of crickets. They are gluten, soy, dairy- and nut-free, NON-GMO and have no refined sugars.

Today I want to speak about what gets in the way of accessing your inner badass, and that is this particular feeling. I don’t have a word for it, but I can describe it: it’s that feeling when you walk into a room, have an interaction with someone, and then depart that interaction feeling absolutely drained. In my practice, I’ve observed that women, more than men, are attuned to these feelings. And the unfortunate part is, these feelings can penetrate into our relationships, get in the way of our productivity, and can get in the way of our ability to amplify within our businesses.

My guest today, Art Giser, is an expert in removing and clearing this energy. He’s been an Energetic NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner for the last 30 years and has a particular focus in working with mission-driven individuals to help them understand and tap into their own energetics, their own energetic karma, and how to get rid of other people’s energy so you can accelerate in the mission you were meant to do. This is one of those factors that is a below-the-surface secret to success!

My guest today, Erin Wathen, is a food expert. She came to understand how we diet and why we don’t do well on them after her own personal journey of yo-yo dieting — starting from when she was only 15 years old. This is a story that so many of us can relate to but don’t know how to break free from.

In this episode, Erin talks extensively about food addiction and we go into great detail about how it’s not food that we are after, but actually, feelings that we are chasing. More explicitly, it’s actually a neurochemical reaction that we are trying to elicit. All of us on some level have a challenge with food addiction. And today, Erin breaks it all down for us. She explains how emotional components come into play with unhealthy eating habits, why we gain weight in the first place, how to stop yo-yo dieting and become a mindful eater, the connection between the food we choose to eat and its influence on our sleep and she gives us her five essential tips to literally be healthier by the end of this week!

Key Takeaways:

[1:33] About my guest today, Erin Wathen.

[3:08] Welcoming Erin to the podcast.

[3:15] Erin takes us through her personal and professional story.

[10:02] The emotional component of eating.

[19:57] How to address food addiction head on.

More About Erin Wathen

Erin Wathen is a holistic health coach, food abuse counselor and the author of Why Can’t I Stick to My Diet?: How To End The Food Drama. Originally from the West Coast, Erin worked in human resources in NYC for many years.

As a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and a Food Addiction Counselor (INFACT), Erin understands the science behind health. As a Certified Spinning® Instructor (STAR 3), Vinyasa Yoga instructor (200 Hour) and Classical
Pilates instructor, she understands the mechanics of health as well. Fortunately,
she also knows how to break it all down into everyday language for her clients.

Despite her wealth of knowledge on diet and exercise, Erin was not at peace with her body. She found true nutrition to be the missing piece of the puzzle. She was always on a diet and yet never reached her goal weight. Through a lot of trial and error, Erin found her last diet, which became her food plan and the basis of her book, Why Can’t I Stick to My Diet? The book is currently available online at Amazon and will be available in bookstores November 2018.

Her philosophy simply put: Health isn’t a number on the scale or how often
we exercise, but our lives as a whole. She partners with her clients to work on
solutions that fit into their lifestyle, empowering them to live their healthiest life
in our crazy world.

My guest today is someone I have known and respected for a very long time. She is the epitome of a go-getter; she is an entrepreneur, a colleague, and a naturopathic doctor. She’s immensely passionate around one of the most foundational things we look at as NDs — that’s also probably the least favorite thing you talk about as health seekers or as patients — and that is: poo.

Today’s guest is a perfect encapsulation of what Entropology is all about. Cydney Mar is a multi-passionate entrepreneur with a flair for reinvention, believing that the lessons and skills you learn as you go through life are things that can serve you later on in compelling and amplifying ways.

Early in her career, she suffered a tragic accident as a national level competitive figure skater and then found herself in the fashion world. She leveraged the discipline she learned as a skater and used this to be able to build a fashion empire where her clothing was featured on QVC in eight countries for over 15 years! A second health scare (that was a near-death experience) caused her to transition her career once again, not only to focus on fashion but to emerge in the wellness space — and launch her own supplement line!

In this interview, Cydney gives us really incredible insight in terms of launching a project, the way of thinking like an entrepreneur, and how to serve people in a really big way. We talk about health — but really, in particular, talk about the business of building products for people. Cydney has a business now that assists practitioners (or other entrepreneurs) to take a product idea and actually start to bring it to market. Cydney’s story is the perfect blend of balancing health and entrepreneurship, which I know a lot of you will find tremendously interesting!

Key Takeaways:

[1:32] About today’s guest, Cydney Mar.

[3:14] Welcoming Cydney to the podcast!

[3:24] About Cydney’s journey as an entrepreneur.

[10:26] What helped lead Cydney in such a positive direction right after her tragic accident?

[11:51] The first few, early steps Cydney took with her business to get to where she is now.

[16:23] What caught Cydney by surprise when she was just starting out? And some of the common mistakes entrepreneurs make early on.

[20:28] The three concepts to create a successful product.

[23:00] How the transition of Cydney incorporating health and wellness into her purview of entrepreneurial outlets came about.

[27:48] How Cydney has found the development of a nutraceutical product line in the supplement world different than (or similar to) developing products in the fashion world.

[35:00] How being in the wellness space and working with natural health products helps and supports Cydney’s lifestyle as an entrepreneur.

[38:00] Some of the core tenets Cydney is following for her physical health.

[42:15] What would Cydney tell somebody who’s facing change or really trying to get their feet back on the ground? How does she help someone not only survive but thrive?

[43:35] What would Cydney like her legacy to be?

[44:53] About our Impact LIVEs event in Toronto!

[46:40] Cydney’s KPIs!

When you’re facing change in your life you should not be reactive, but get grounded and nurture yourself. Put time and effort into your self-care because you’re going to need everything you’ve got to heal yourself and rise up to the challenge. There is one concept that if it interrupts the flow in our brain it can take us off the pathway of momentum faster than most other things I know — and that is this concept of imposter syndrome. With imposter syndrome, you’ll believe that the success you’ve achieved has really been created on a false foundation of self — that all of your success was on accident or based purely on luck and you don’t truly have the skills to back yourself up.

So, I wanted to explore this concept and learn how we, as entrepreneurs, can pull ourselves out of this mindset and learn how to take ownership of our capacity to achieve big things in this world. And I could think of no one better than to help me unpack this concept and move through it, than the one and only Susan Hobson. Susan is an NLP Coach, who works with executives, athletes, and people who want to take their game to the next level. She has been a guest on the podcast before and she’s going to be one of our headline keynote speakers at our upcoming Impact LIVEs Event!

This episode, I wanted to reintroduce you to her ideas, thoughts, and capacity to take you to the next level. She takes us through the concept of imposter syndrome (how we get there and how we can pull ourselves out of it), how to interrupt the “Yeah, buts” in our self-talk, how to find clarity and purpose in regards to your mission, and more.

Key Takeaways:

[1:48] About our guest for today, Susan Hobson.

[3:36] Welcoming Susan back to the podcast!

[5:42] What is imposter syndrome and how do we get there?

[9:37] How do we pull ourselves out of imposter syndrome?

[11:53] How do we interrupt the “Yeah, but” in our self-talk?

[13:13] Is there a different dialogue we can engage to get us past limiting beliefs?

[14:53] About Susan’s own experience with imposter syndrome.

[18:44] Does Susan feel that women have a harder time accessing their confidence than men?

[23:18] How does Susan work with people around mindset so they’re in a state of expansive thinking and ready to step forward.

[25:30] How to learn how to take responsibility for your mindset and patterns.

[28:05] Is having clarity and purpose of where you want to go the first step to pulling yourself out the mud?

[29:13] What Susan recommends to those who are maybe a little bit lost about their mission.

[32:30] Calling out perfectionism: why being a perfectionist keeps you on the sidelines.

I have this ongoing “chicken or the egg” question about what really comes first when we move towards optimal health. Is it your mindset that drives the performance that enables you to live your best life or is it your health that drives your mindset? Luckily today, I have the perfect guest to help me answer this exact question: Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi, also known as Dr. K.

Yashar is an accomplished Naturopathic Doctor and Brain-Based Executive Coach. He is incredible when it comes to understanding how we need to change, not only what we are thinking, but the way we are thinking to be able to actualize on our true potential.

This episode, Dr. K. and I get into all sorts of things today including the very cool, “biohacking” gadgets that he uses in his practice to help people understand and feel what it’s like to truly be calm and integrated with themselves (so that they have a platform upon which they can start to move forward, in terms of their own understanding of health and personal potential.) We also talk about Dr. K.’s approach and practice in general and dive deep into how people can better themselves — both in mindset and in their health.

Key Takeaways:

[1:44] About my guest today, Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi.

[3:03] Welcoming Dr. K. to the podcast.

[3:29] About Dr. K,’s background and how he got to where he is today!

[5:40] What makes people want to be better?

[6:45] Why is it that some people don’t want to be better?

[9:13] What is it about Dr. K.’s experiences that enabled to him approach life in this way?

[11:16] What is a Brain-Based Executive Coach?

[13:23] Dr. K.’s approach as a Brain-Based Executive Coach.

[15:25] How Brain-Based Executive Coaching intersects with naturopathic medicine.

[19:05] Dr. K. gives a starting point for re-orienting how you think, view, and appropriately question things.

[21:56] How long does it generally take Dr. K. to get people to the place they need to be?

[23:18] For people to be successful, is it a prerequisite that they’ve dealt with everything in their past?

[25:06] Dr. K. talks about his quote: “It’s much easier for us to create new neural pathways related to new behaviors than to destroy the ones that we had previously established.” He also illustrates the idea with a quick story.

[29:30] Dr. K. talks about some of the cool, “biohacking” gadgets that he uses in his practice.

[32:25] How Dr. K. incorporates these devices into his practice.

[33:12] What does Dr. K. do in his practice to help support people’s parasympathetic side?

Some starting points in terms of re-orienting how we think and expand our capacity for how we view things in a different way involve a few key ingredients. 1) You need some quiet space alone from everybody. 2) You need to ask yourself powerful, intrinsic questions to help you understand why you do the things you do on a deeper level. 3) Live harmoniously with your ideals. There’s something we need to talk about, and that is time and energy. Often, I’ll have entrepreneurs coming into my practice with really strong intentions around their health but what I’m hearing from them is that there’s consistently a lack of time getting in the way of them executing the ideas we’re putting down for them to take up.

And here’s the thing with time and energy: they’re two of the same thing. Most of the time when people think they don’t have it, what they’re really referring to is a lack of energy. When people don’t have enough time, what they really mean is they don’t have enough energy. Think about that in the context of your own life. When you didn’t have enough time to get everything done during the day, was it because you truly couldn’t execute on all of it, or was it that you weren't focused or efficient in the time that you were leveraging?

Energy is actually the ultimate currency — it is the secret weapon of time. If we are going to hack your energy and time, then it’s really important that we get a handle on both. So, this episode I’m going to be bringing you my own energy hacks for entrepreneurs and how you can leverage time more efficiently. Because, ultimately, that’s what is going to distinguish what you can get done in a 24-hour period vs. somebody else.

Key Takeaways:

[1:25] About our topic for today: leveraging your time and energy as an entrepreneur.

[3:37] Some ideas from Brendon Burchard on how to be highly productive: not checking email or social media first thing in the morning.

[5:52] Create a consistent routine before going to bed to improve overall sleep and energy.

[10:28] How to improve sleep: find a meditative or mindfulness practice, include exercise, decrease use of blue light (technology), and more.

[15:24] Hydration is incredibly important — reach for water instead of caffeine!

[17:10] If you feel fatigued, check for anemia, and consult with your practitioner on taking vitamin B12, vitamin D, and magnesium. Also, be sure to look at your thyroid and adrenal health.

[22:06] Management of blood sugar through steadily eating throughout the day is incredibly important in maintaining your health, energy, and focus. Replace your meals with lots of color, protein, and healthy fats to maintain your blood sugar.

[27:40] Other key things to consider: if coffee is your go-to it is fine in small amounts but becomes a red flag if it is your primary source of fuel to keep yourself focused. Consider switching to a green tea, matcha, or a coffee with mushroom in it.

[28:52] Take a little bit of a free time for yourself. Set aside some time to rest, relax, and recharge.

[31:07] I’m sure you all have some really cool ideas in terms of maintaining your energy levels (both in your business and in your personal life) and I would love to hear about them. Please be sure to share them on the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page!

Aug 21, 2018

There’s this phenomenon that I see when someone is being exposed to chemical or environmental pollutants over and over again, and that is: everytime they encounter it their symptoms tend to worsen but they tend to be consistent. Think about drinking milk when you may be lactose sensitive, or walking through the perfume aisle in the mall. Generally, as we increase our burden of exposure, our reactions become more and more intense.

In a world where our environment is increasingly creeping into our cells, the incidence of these types of symptoms in our offices is increasing on an almost daily basis. Whether it is thyroid, skin, or other chronic health issues, the environment to which you expose yourself is frequently to blame. This doesn’t only apply to those who are chronically unwell; many of you are walking around all the time with environmental symptoms that can be cleaned up for you easily.

My guest today, Dr. Aviad Elgez, is a naturopathic doctor and environmental investigator. He owns a clinic in Toronto called EnviroMed Clinic and he is an expert at assessing and treating environmental exposures. Today Dr. Elgez and I get into this topic in great detail and discuss the specifics of what these pollutants are, where they come from, how they affect our body, and ways we can counteract or avoid them.

Key Takeaways:

CALL TO ACTION

There are many ways that we can begin to counteract and avoid everyday pollutants regardless of whether or not we feel any symptoms. Start with switching out some of your products that may be full of chemicals and added scents (such as some laundry detergents, as Dr. Elgez recommended) — these can be very sensitizing to some people. Some other easy changes to make are opening up your windows from time to time to cleanse your indoor environment, making sure to get your daily dose of green vegetables, and being sure to use all-natural products. Remember to share your commitment on the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page! Because when you are accountable, you are helpable.

When it comes to our health as women, there’s one topic that we all probably have familiarity with: the birth control pill and exogenous hormones. Of all the things I talk about in my practice, this is the one where women are searching for the greatest level of honesty and clarity around the influence of the pill on their long-term health. The effects and implications for susceptible people can be devastating.

In this episode, we’re going to get into some of the problems with the pill, and some of the things you can do if you choose to stay on it. My expert and guest for today’s show, Dr. Ginger Nash, ND, is the perfect person to have this conversation with. She graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1998 and in her 20 years of clinical practice has worked with thousands of women on natural hormone balance without the use of hormone replacement. She’s also recently launched a new brand called Feminology: The Art and Science of Female Hormones, with her colleague, Dr. Tara Nayak. Together, they interweave the scientific knowledge behind natural medicine and the art of helping women heal.

Key Takeaways:

[1:54] About my guest today, Dr. Ginger Nash.

[3:55] Welcoming Dr. Ginger Nash to the podcast.

[4:30] What brought Dr. Ginger Nash to the path of naturopathic medicine.

[17:13] Issues with taking the pill and why everyone should be tested before taking the pill.

[19:09] Shifting the narrative and embracing menstruation.

[19:58] Dr. Ginger Nash invites you to the Feminology Facebook page!

[25:29] The things Dr. Ginger Nash recommends for those taking the birth control pill or HRT.

[30:50] What is the lymphatic system? Why is it relevant to clearing, detoxification, and overall health as it pertains to hormones?

[34:48] Would Dr. Ginger Nash start with lymphatics on someone who is displaying a deficiency in progesterone (without it showing up on lab work?)

[36:19] The tests Dr. Ginger Nash conducts with women to understand where they are in regard to their overall health.

We are constantly exposed to environmental toxins which means our detoxification systems need to be functioning adequately to keep up. The Lymphatic system plays a key role in supporting detoxification so this week’s call to action is to support lymphatic drainage with a few simple habits you can do right at home. A few ways to accomplish this is through dry brushing, daily movement/exercise and/or deep breathing exercises.   How are you committing to supporting your detoxification pathways? What if I told you that just through a few simple movements for 10-15 minutes every single day, you could increase your capacity to relax, focus, detoxify, sleep, and protect your body from pollutants? The ancient practice of Qigong improves all of these things in people’s lives!

My guest today, Sue Crites, is a certified Qigong instructor and master healer. She is also a nutritionist and has been working in energetic forms of healing for a very long time — in fact, we met at a workshop almost 10 years ago looking at auricular medicine (which we also get into later on in the podcast!) Sue has created a really innovative business for two reasons: one, she makes Qigong accessible to people who never thought this was a system of medicine or healing that would be of interest to them, and two, she does it online.

Sue has found a really captivating way of taking this ancient form of healing and making it relevant to the types of pressures that we have in today’s day and age. In this episode, we talk about parenthood, energy, entrepreneurialism, and of course, Qigong, and how this very simple process can fundamentally change your life.

[15:56] Sue describes The Five Element Theory and how it can help balance out our emotions.

[19:00] Do emotions drive physiological disease or does physiological disease drive emotions to the surface?

[21:35] Is there a certain type of person that is attracted to Qigong? How does Sue introduce Qigong to people who may be resistant?

[26:00] What is a “blockage” in regards to an impediment to healing?

About 20 years ago someone handed me a book about women’s health and naturopathic medicine, by Carolyn Dean. I found this book profound — so profound in fact that I made the decision that I would study naturopathic medicine. And here we are now, nearly 20 years later, and I have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Carolyn Dean.

Carolyn Dean is a medical doctor who went back and studied naturopathic medicine and now practices in New York. She is a prolific author, researcher, and commenter on trends with respect to medicine.

One of her areas of expertise that she is most passionate about is understanding the role of magnesium in the body. As she explains in this interview, magnesium has over 800 functions in the body and — in her opinion — is one of the most common areas of deficiency. In fact, many of the chronic diseases we are medicated for in our healthcare system may actually be deficiencies in magnesium. This very simple mineral can have profound, lasting effects on your health! This interview is fascinating, in-depth — and is for anyone that is human!

Key Takeaways:

[1:55] About my guest today, Carolyn Dean.

[4:04] Welcoming Carolyn Dean to the podcast!

[4:30] How and why Carolyn made the transition from medical doctor to naturopath.

[14:21] The advice Carolyn would give to new practitioners in terms of self-care.

[16:47] What was it that got Carolyn interested in magnesium?

[22:53] How magnesium can have a profound effect on chronic diseases.

[25:06] Is magnesium more important than other minerals? Where does it fit in context?

[28:02] Is a calcium magnesium supplement insufficient as a magnesium supplement?

[29:55] What should you be looking for when purchasing a magnesium supplement?

[32:50] Are there side effects of supplementing on magnesium?

[36:50] Is there any indication when to switch from magnesium orally to topically?

[43:35] What Dr. Dean would like her legacy to be.

[47:10] Dr. Dean’s key-performance indicators.

[53:40] Where to find Carolyn online!

More About Carolyn Dean

Dr. Dean is not only a medical doctor, but also a naturopath, herbalist, acupuncturist, nutritionist, lecturer, consultant, author, inventor, and entrepreneur. Dr. Dean has been at the forefront of health issues for over 30 years.

She graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1978, holds a medical license in California and is a graduate of The Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine – now the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto. She served on the board of Governors of the CCNM for six years.

After writing about magnesium deficiency for over 15 years, Dr. Dean had encouraged magnesium companies to make a fully absorbed magnesium product instead of the medical recommendation for magnesium oxide which is only 4% absorbed. Finally, she realized she had to accomplish this task herself and created ReMag® which is 100% absorbed at the cellular level in its stabilized ionic form. Thus, nothing is lost to the laxative effect. Then, she went on to create more RnA ReSet formulas of the highest quality, which are fully absorbed at the cellular level and give the body the building blocks it needs in order to maintain optimal health.

Jul 10, 2018

A few years ago, Arianna Huffington famously said, “To be effective, you need to sleep your way to the top.” What she was talking about is not what you’re thinking — it is, however, exactly what she said! You need to sleep.

What I want to talk to you today is not about how you sleep or who you sleep with but how you literally outplay your competition. Today we’ve got a solo episode — so you’re stuck with me! And I thought, on the brink of summer, there is nothing better than to discuss than the physiological importance of — what for it — play! Play is massively important to your health and frankly, your life.

In this episode I explain why play is so important and how this shift in mindset to prioritize can help you become a results-driven entrepreneur opposed to a time-trading entrepreneur.

Key Takeaways:

[1:24] All about our solo episode today.

[3:17] Why we tend to neglect play and why we shouldn’t.

[5:41] One of the concepts that got me to actively engage in play.

[6:49] The many forms play can take as an adult.

[7:21] The interesting framework of games and how it’s the perfect construction to turn on specific physiological pathways.

[10:10] How cortisol and dopamine affect us as entrepreneurs.

[13:05] How we can get our dopamine outside of work.

[14:28] How video games can be the perfect dopamine fix and lower cortisol levels (within specific stipulations).

[17:50] How play not only positively impacts our day-to-day physiology but our longitudinal physiology as well.

[18:17] My two challenges to you!
