There’s something we need to talk about, and that is time and energy. Often, I’ll have entrepreneurs coming into my practice with really strong intentions around their health but what I’m hearing from them is that there’s consistently a lack of time getting in the way of them executing the ideas we’re putting down for them to take up.

And here’s the thing with time and energy: they’re two of the same thing. Most of the time when people think they don’t have it, what they’re really referring to is a lack of energy. When people don’t have enough time, what they really mean is they don’t have enough energy. Think about that in the context of your own life. When you didn’t have enough time to get everything done during the day, was it because you truly couldn’t execute on all of it, or was it that you weren't focused or efficient in the time that you were leveraging?

Energy is actually the ultimate currency — it is the secret weapon of time. If we are going to hack your energy and time, then it’s really important that we get a handle on both. So, this episode I’m going to be bringing you my own energy hacks for entrepreneurs and how you can leverage time more efficiently. Because, ultimately, that’s what is going to distinguish what you can get done in a 24-hour period vs. somebody else.

Key Takeaways:

[1:25] About our topic for today: leveraging your time and energy as an entrepreneur.

[3:37] Some ideas from Brendon Burchard on how to be highly productive: not checking email or social media first thing in the morning.

[5:52] Create a consistent routine before going to bed to improve overall sleep and energy.

[10:28] How to improve sleep: find a meditative or mindfulness practice, include exercise, decrease use of blue light (technology), and more.

[15:24] Hydration is incredibly important — reach for water instead of caffeine!

[17:10] If you feel fatigued, check for anemia, and consult with your practitioner on taking vitamin B12, vitamin D, and magnesium. Also, be sure to look at your thyroid and adrenal health.

[22:06] Management of blood sugar through steadily eating throughout the day is incredibly important in maintaining your health, energy, and focus. Replace your meals with lots of color, protein, and healthy fats to maintain your blood sugar.

[27:40] Other key things to consider: if coffee is your go-to it is fine in small amounts but becomes a red flag if it is your primary source of fuel to keep yourself focused. Consider switching to a green tea, matcha, or a coffee with mushroom in it.

[28:52] Take a little bit of a free time for yourself. Set aside some time to rest, relax, and recharge.

[31:07] I’m sure you all have some really cool ideas in terms of maintaining your energy levels (both in your business and in your personal life) and I would love to hear about them. Please be sure to share them on the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page!

I have this ongoing “chicken or the egg” question about what really comes first when we move towards optimal health. Is it your mindset that drives the performance that enables you to live your best life or is it your health that drives your mindset? Luckily today, I have the perfect guest to help me answer this exact question: Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi, also known as Dr. K.

Yashar is an accomplished Naturopathic Doctor and Brain-Based Executive Coach. He is incredible when it comes to understanding how we need to change, not only what we are thinking, but the way we are thinking to be able to actualize on our true potential.

This episode, Dr. K. and I get into all sorts of things today including the very cool, “biohacking” gadgets that he uses in his practice to help people understand and feel what it’s like to truly be calm and integrated with themselves (so that they have a platform upon which they can start to move forward, in terms of their own understanding of health and personal potential.) We also talk about Dr. K.’s approach and practice in general and dive deep into how people can better themselves — both in mindset and in their health.

Key Takeaways:

[1:44] About my guest today, Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi.

[3:03] Welcoming Dr. K. to the podcast.

[3:29] About Dr. K,’s background and how he got to where he is today!

[5:40] What makes people want to be better?

[6:45] Why is it that some people don’t want to be better?

[9:13] What is it about Dr. K.’s experiences that enabled to him approach life in this way?

[11:16] What is a Brain-Based Executive Coach?

[13:23] Dr. K.’s approach as a Brain-Based Executive Coach.

[15:25] How Brain-Based Executive Coaching intersects with naturopathic medicine.

[19:05] Dr. K. gives a starting point for re-orienting how you think, view, and appropriately question things.

[21:56] How long does it generally take Dr. K. to get people to the place they need to be?

[23:18] For people to be successful, is it a prerequisite that they’ve dealt with everything in their past?

[25:06] Dr. K. talks about his quote: “It’s much easier for us to create new neural pathways related to new behaviors than to destroy the ones that we had previously established.” He also illustrates the idea with a quick story.

[29:30] Dr. K. talks about some of the cool, “biohacking” gadgets that he uses in his practice.

[32:25] How Dr. K. incorporates these devices into his practice.

[33:12] What does Dr. K. do in his practice to help support people’s parasympathetic side?

[36:47] Key practices that Dr. K. engages in on a daily basis.

[38:40] How Dr. K. defines health.

Some starting points in terms of re-orienting how we think and expand our capacity for how we view things in a different way involve a few key ingredients. 1) You need some quiet space alone from everybody. 2) You need to ask yourself powerful, intrinsic questions to help you understand why you do the things you do on a deeper level. 3) Live harmoniously with your ideals. Try taking these first few steps and follow-up on the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page — because when you are accountable, you are helpable.

There’s this phenomenon that I see when someone is being exposed to chemical or environmental pollutants over and over again, and that is: everytime they encounter it their symptoms tend to worsen but they tend to be consistent. Think about drinking milk when you may be lactose sensitive, or walking through the perfume aisle in the mall. Generally, as we increase our burden of exposure, our reactions become more and more intense.

In a world where our environment is increasingly creeping into our cells, the incidence of these types of symptoms in our offices is increasing on an almost daily basis. Whether it is thyroid, skin, or other chronic health issues, the environment to which you expose yourself is frequently to blame. This doesn’t only apply to those who are chronically unwell; many of you are walking around all the time with environmental symptoms that can be cleaned up for you easily.

My guest today, Dr. Aviad Elgez, is a naturopathic doctor and environmental investigator. He owns a clinic in Toronto called EnviroMed Clinic and he is an expert at assessing and treating environmental exposures. Today Dr. Elgez and I get into this topic in great detail and discuss the specifics of what these pollutants are, where they come from, how they affect our body, and ways we can counteract or avoid them.

Key Takeaways:

[1:52] About my guest today, Dr. Aviad Elgez.

[3:37] Welcoming Dr. Elgez to the podcast.

[3:57] What is environmental medicine and why should we care?

[5:48] How Dr. Elgez got into environmental medicine.

[9:00] Classic reexposure patterns Dr. Aviad recognizes in patients.

[12:29] Why are some people more susceptible to environmental toxins than others?

[15:57] How Dr. Elgez assesses total body burden from environmental toxins (from a testing perspective).

[19:49] What are the most common things people are exposed to on a daily basis?

[24:22] Ways to decrease the presence of solvents in the air in your home.

[26:32] What you should clean your house with.

[28:37] How everyday exposures add up and negatively affect us.

[34:14] Ways to increase the burden on our bodies from these toxins.

[38:47] How to clear persistent pollutants from your body using an infrared sauna.

[42:20] Alternative options to the infrared sauna.

[43:25] Should we be detoxing seasonally?

[47:07] Dr. Elgez’s key-performance indicators.

[55:48] Where to learn more about Dr. Elgez.

More About Aviad Elgez

Dr. Aviad Elgez, ND, is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor who graduated with recognition and awards for academic excellence from the accredited Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2008. Dr. Elgez also holds a psychology degree from York University. In 2013 he completed advanced training in Environmental Medicine (with Dr. Walter Crinnion) and Intravenous Therapy.

Dr. Elgez is very involved with the environmental medicine community, where he presented at conferences such as The Environmental Health Symposium – where he received an award in 2017 for his work on Solvent exposure.

Dr. Elgez’s passion is in Environmental Medicine, working in collaboration with other NDs and MDs as an investigator for very complex patient cases, trying to solve the mystery behind their symptoms. He also has particular interests in treating neurological/mental health and autoimmune conditions; these include conditions such as anxiety, depression, Lyme disease (MSIDS), Parkinson’s disease, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, multiple sclerosis (MS), Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), and chronic fatigue syndrome.

“My greatest joy comes from seeing significant and long-lasting improvements to my patients’ health. Finding and correcting the underlying cause of symptoms requires taking the time to listen to my patients, do a proper assessment, and provide them with an accurate diagnosis. This is the reason why I’m passionate about staying up-to-date on the newest research and treatment options.” Dr. Aviad Elgez

There are many ways that we can begin to counteract and avoid everyday pollutants regardless of whether or not we feel any symptoms. Start with switching out some of your products that may be full of chemicals and added scents (such as some laundry detergents, as Dr. Elgez recommended) — these can be very sensitizing to some people. Some other easy changes to make are opening up your windows from time to time to cleanse your indoor environment, making sure to get your daily dose of green vegetables, and being sure to use all-natural products. When it comes to our health as women, there’s one topic that we all probably have familiarity with: the birth control pill and exogenous hormones. Of all the things I talk about in my practice, this is the one where women are searching for the greatest level of honesty and clarity around the influence of the pill on their long-term health. The effects and implications for susceptible people can be devastating.

In this episode, we’re going to get into some of the problems with the pill, and some of the things you can do if you choose to stay on it. My expert and guest for today’s show, Dr. Ginger Nash, ND, is the perfect person to have this conversation with. She graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1998 and in her 20 years of clinical practice has worked with thousands of women on natural hormone balance without the use of hormone replacement. She’s also recently launched a new brand called Feminology: The Art and Science of Female Hormones, with her colleague, Dr. Tara Nayak. Together, they interweave the scientific knowledge behind natural medicine and the art of helping women heal.

Key Takeaways:

We are constantly exposed to environmental toxins which means our detoxification systems need to be functioning adequately to keep up. The Lymphatic system plays a key role in supporting detoxification so this week’s call to action is to support lymphatic drainage with a few simple habits you can do right at home. A few ways to accomplish this is through dry brushing, daily movement/exercise and/or deep breathing exercises.   How are you committing to supporting your detoxification pathways? Share your commitment on the Entrepology Podcast Facebook page! Because when you are accountable, you are helpable.

What if I told you that just through a few simple movements for 10-15 minutes every single day, you could increase your capacity to relax, focus, detoxify, sleep, and protect your body from pollutants? The ancient practice of Qigong improves all of these things in people’s lives!

My guest today, Sue Crites, is a certified Qigong instructor and master healer. She is also a nutritionist and has been working in energetic forms of healing for a very long time — in fact, we met at a workshop almost 10 years ago looking at auricular medicine (which we also get into later on in the podcast!) Sue has created a really innovative business for two reasons: one, she makes Qigong accessible to people who never thought this was a system of medicine or healing that would be of interest to them, and two, she does it online.

Sue has found a really captivating way of taking this ancient form of healing and making it relevant to the types of pressures that we have in today’s day and age. In this episode, we talk about parenthood, energy, entrepreneurialism, and of course, Qigong, and how this very simple process can fundamentally change your life.

Key Takeaways:

[2:09] About my guest today, Sue.

[4:14] Welcoming Sue Crites on the podcast.

[4:30] Sue shares her journey as a healer and nutritionist, and how she’s come to incorporate energetics into her practice.

[9:40] Sue explains what auricular medicine is.

[11:28] Sue explains what Qigong is.

[13:19] How frequently should you practice Qigong to receive the benefits?

[14:31] Prior to Qigong, did Sue follow the philosophies of Chinese medicine and incorporate them into her practice?

[15:56] Sue describes The Five Element Theory and how it can help balance out our emotions.

[19:00] Do emotions drive physiological disease or does physiological disease drive emotions to the surface?

[21:35] Is there a certain type of person that is attracted to Qigong? How does Sue introduce Qigong to people who may be resistant?

[26:00] What is a “blockage” in regards to an impediment to healing?

[28:50] The influence of wifi and EMF fields on our health.

[32:18] How to practice Qigong every day.
