So, what do multiple bodybuilders who have previously been on The Entrepology Podcast have in common? It is that nearly all of them, following a period of intense competition, saw a massive deterioration of their health. Now think about this: these are athletes performing at their highest level. They’re at the most optimized state of physical physique — and yet, their body is falling apart on the inside.

Today I am joined by Wade Lightheart. Wade is a former Mr. Universe competitor, a 3X Canadian Bodybuilding Champion, and the co-founder and Director of Education for Biooptimizers. Wade is also the host of his podcast, The Awesome Health Podcast. And all around, he’s just an absolute wealth of knowledge! He’s highly articulate and extremely well-researched in the areas of health optimization. In fact, it was Wade’s own journey — one through watching his sister move through deteriorated health — and then his own (coming out of his bodybuilding period) that really encouraged him to delve deep into exploring this issues.

What was really enjoyable about today’s conversation with Wade was the way in which he was able to weave — not only a philosophical perspective on health — but some tangible research-focused elements into our conversation that related to biohacking from the inside-out. So much of Wade’s work focuses on the gut and digestive health issues — because, even as Hippocrates said 2,500 years ago, all health starts in the gut.

So, for anyone who’s interested in taking their health to the next level, understanding how to optimize your digestive health is where things absolutely must start! And there’s no better person to get us started on that conversation than Wade Lightheart himself!

Key Takeaways:

[1:38] About today’s episode!

[3:41] Welcoming Wade to the podcast!

[3:48] How did Wade get to where he is, right now, today?

[5:10] Is it common in the bodybuilding industry for bodybuilders to focus more on their physical physique rather than their health from the inside-out?

[7:37] Was it Wade’s work in bodybuilding and his own health crisis that led him to do the work that he does now?

[8:49] When was Wade’s ‘aha moment’ of realizing the gut was the root cause of all the downstream effects he had been seeing in his own health and others?

[10:37] The key metrics Wade wants people to look at in order to measure their health.

[12:47] When Wade is working with some with respect to gut health, where does he start with them? And what is the process he takes them through to get them back on track?

[23:01] Wade shares his thoughts on the attention people get from being sick.

[26:50] How Wade defines health.

[27:15] Wade speaks about some of the interventions on how to begin remedying gut issues and restore optimal digestion.

[31:26] Should we be supplementing enzymes? And should you stay on them consistently?

[42:58] Wade’s key performance indicators!

[45:45] Where to learn more about what Wade is up to!

Today’s theme is all about business — expanding your money mindset, balancing your business and family, and getting the support you deserve as a female entrepreneur!

My guest today, Sandy Connery, is the co-founder of Namastream Software — an online digital platform that enables yoga instructors and wellness practitioners to take their knowledge into the online space by teaching various courses. So, today is a story about the coming together of healing and badassery, with my incredible guest today, Kayla Saint-Onge! I have known Kayla for a number of years, so I am really excited to finally have her on the show!

In this episode, Kayla explains to us her energetic healing modality called BioEnergetic Intolerance Elimination (otherwise known as BIE). BIE is a natural, non-invasive method that helps a person's body identify stressors that are causing symptoms and brings their body back to balance. Kayla studied holistic nutrition for a long time, which eventually led to her becoming a BIE practitioner because of her own journey with managing ulcerative colitis. Her understanding and exploration of energetic medicine is so deeply fascinating and has been so helpful to her that she decided that she wanted to be able to apply it to others as well. BIE literally has the capacity to clear people of their sensitivities and intolerances.

Join us this episode as Kayla goes into detail, describing how BIE works and the incredible benefits to this powerful modality!

Key Takeaways:

[:47] About today’s episode!

[2:57] Welcoming Kayla to the podcast!

[3:22] Kayla shares her story of how she became inspired to help others heal.

[7:50] Kayla speaks deeper about her own holistic healing journey — healing both emotionally and physically.

[9:55] What is BioEnergetic Intolerance Elimination (BIE)?

[11:21] Can BIE help rebalance or reset energetic intolerances beyond food allergies?

[12:42] Why are some food intolerances much more frequently occurring than others (such as wheat, eggs, and dairy)?

[14:35] How long does the BIE session take? And how long does it take to see results?

[15:50] What does Kayla observe about the people who are much more resilient to (or have a higher tolerance to) external energies?

[16:55] What are some of the commonalities amongst people who are more sensitive to everything?

[19:26] Is there a way to navigate energetic frequencies of medications people need to be on?

[21:44] What have been some of the most profound shifts Kayla has witnessed with the clients she has worked with as a result of applying energetic healing?

[24:27] Has Kayla always been open to the notion of energetic healing?

[29:37] Discussing the power of combining practices and modalities with BIE!

[32:00] Kayla’s key performance indicators!

[36:30] Where to find Kayla online!

More About Kayla Saint-Onge

Kayla Saint-Onge began her healing journey after experiencing severe digestive health issues which resulted in an autoimmune diagnosis. It was after she was hospitalized as a result of her ulcerative colitis, that she decided to pursue a holistic approach to her healing. This led Kayla to begin her studies as a Holistic Nutritionist with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition where she graduated with distinction of merit.

While she managed to overcome some of her health issues using diet and natural supplements, this approach alone was not giving her the quality of life she believed her body was capable of achieving. During her search for alternative healing modalities, Kayla was referred to a BioEnergetics (BIE) Practitioner. After working with the BIE Practitioner, she was able to experience a deeper healing of her digestive issues. Using a unique tool known as the GSR-120, her body was brought back to balance allowing it to begin to heal itself.

With her passion for holistic health and wellness, Kayla further pursued her education and training with the Institute of Natural Health Technologies to become a Registered BioEnergetics Practitioner.

Kayla’s experience as a BIE Practitioner is one of her primary modalities in helping her clients achieve balance to finally heal. She works with clients on a variety of stressor-related symptoms to help alleviate them of digestive and emotional issues as well as food and environmental intolerances.

Kayla believes that every individual is capable of healing and is extremely passionate about helping her clients uncover the true causes of their symptoms so that they can restore their health and live their most vibrant life.

Here’s the challenge in the day-to-day life of an entrepreneur: they get that they should be doing breathwork, yoga, and eating whole foods… But the reality is they feel super busy. They’ve got clearly articulated goals on the business side but actually making that leap to hit those goals with respect to one’s career is often a difficult chasm to leap across.

My guest today, Selina Rose, is a nutritionist, an integrative holistic health coach, and a yoga instructor. And what’s so cool about Selina’s approach to health is that she’s really been able to break it down into a framework that is easily and readily accessible for people who are on the go.

In this episode, Selina offers all sorts of tangible tips and really acknowledges that there is a leap that needs to take place between ‘living the life of an entrepreneur’ and being able to find that semblance of balance. Selina highlights the tactics and tools we can use to help achieve this — how to transition to a more sustainable way of living to optimize your health and your business, and the pillars of her C.A.L.M. system that she uses to help her clients reach their goals!

Key Takeaways:

[1:17] About today’s show with Selina Rose!

[2:40] Welcoming Selina to the podcast!

[3:01] Selina tells us all about her background: what she does and how she got here!

[4:45] What Selina says to the people who believe you can’t be healthy and have a fruitful career.

[6:19] Where does Selina start with clients who are currently living or struggling with a non-sustainable level of busyness in their life? How does she help them transition to a new way of life?

[9:00] Once Selina helps her clients identify their values, what is the first, initial health-focused habit she gets them to solidify before they move on?

[10:22] How does Selina help those she works with to incorporate breath work into their everyday lives? And how does breathwork help individuals?

[16:01] Selina takes us through some of the entrepreneurial ninja moves that she’s got in her toolbox!

[18:27] What if you don’t have time for an entire morning routine? What is the one thing you should make time for, no matter what?

[19:20] Selina takes us through some of the pillars of her C.A.L.M System (which is a comprehensive overview that helps people to transition from a state of busyness to one of compassion).

[22:00] What does the end success look like after this transition?

[23:30] Is there a way of eating that Selina really subscribes to? And does she meet people where they are?

[25:09] How does Selina help her clients begin cooking at home even when they’re really busy?

[27:07] The importance of understanding the building blocks to a good diet.

[29:35] A good starting point for a good diet: focus on breakfast.

CALL TO ACTION

Our call to action today is to give breath work a try! Set a timer on your phone to remember and commit to at least five ‘breath breaks’ in a day. This is a time where everything stops for 10 breaths. You sit down, close your eyes, get grounded, mindful, and just take 10 deep breaths. It’s about simply completing the 10 breaths. You got this! And remember to follow up with us on The Entrepology Podcast Facebook page — because when you’re accountable, you’re helpable!

If you’ve been hanging out with us for the last few weeks you realize there’s been a theme we’ve been exploring, and it’s this idea of biohacking! Over the last few weeks, we’ve looked at red light therapy, we’ve talked about HRV and this cool device called the Lief, and today is the grand finale to complete this triple threat of biohacking!

I had the pleasure of welcoming my colleague and friend to the podcast, Dr. Marc Bubbs. He is a naturopathic doctor, speaker, performance nutrition lead for Canada Basketball, and the author of his new, second book: Peak: The New Science of Athletic Performance That is Revolutionizing Sports, an integrated and personalized approach to health, nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset. And here’s the thing: Dr. Bubbs knows that my audience is not necessarily elite super athletes, but we are elite and we are super and we’re always looking for an edge when it comes to performance — and that’s what we get into today!

In this episode, we talk about metabolic rate, how to dose your coffee and leverage it in exercise, to keto or not to keto, how to hack our sleep to optimize recovery, and how to take notice of the important recovery cues from our body that let us know whether we should be going hard at the gym or actually pulling back! We also discuss what time of the day is ideal for which types of workout, how to balance nutrition and movement, how to avoid burnout, and the power of addressing your mindset when it comes to performing at an elite level!

From mindset to tactics to movement to food, we cover it all in this episode as we wrap up our biohacking series — so be sure to tune in!

Key Takeaways:

[1:00] About today’s show with Dr. Marc Bubbs!

[2:58] Welcoming Dr. Marc Bubbs back to the show!

[3:16] Dr. Bubbs tells us more about his background and gives an update since the last time he was here.

[4:21] What is Dr. Bubbs’s first recommended step to take to begin performing at a higher level?

[5:49] Does Dr. Bubbs find that high performers get burnt out and struggle with ‘sickness’ or are there people who are inherently unwell? Or is it a bit of both?

[7:22] Does Dr. Bubbs find that people who are consistently getting sick have less understanding around the ideas of recovery? And what do we do about working out and pushing ourselves hard physically when we’re consistently feeling under the weather?

[12:02] What kinds of activities should we be looking at when we aim to get fit in 26 weeks rather than four?

[20:00] How do we balance reps and sets with cardio? Especially for those that struggle with recovery.

[22:04] How do we balance movement and nutrition? What’s Dr. Bubbs’s philosophy around nutrition and endurance.

[24:25] What should we do, on the backend, to fuel our workouts?

[26:06] Should we be having coffee or doing Slow-Low training in a fasted state? What are some of the other keys to success for morning training sessions?

[27:55] When should we be weight training?

[28:50] Keto or not to keto?

[31:17] Dr. Bubbs highlights some objective findings when it comes to the keto diet.

[33:23] What’s the connection between someone’s metabolic rate and their thyroid health? And are the traditional ways that we’re measuring thyroid health sufficient?

[35:58] Dr. Bubb speaks about a key highlight from his book: the correlation between animals living longer and having a higher state of oxidative stress.

[37:57] Dr. Bubbs highlights some of the things related to low resiliency.

[39:52] How to optimize your coffee habit!

[43:30] The power of addressing your mindset when you’re looking to perform at an elite level in life.

What if I told you your body has a secret language? And if you tap into this secret language, you could unlock a whole new way of accessing and utilizing your brain? And not only that, but you could also decrease your stress levels and even increase the length of your life! Well, it’s true! Your body does have a secret language, and it’s called heart rate variability. Heart rate variability is not your heart rate, but the distance between each of your heart beats on average over a minute. And the higher the degree of variability, the healthier your overall system!

As a clinician, I’ve always been deeply interested in HRV but have been dissatisfied with devices on the market to actually measure it — that is... until now! We’ve been implementing a device called the Lief at our practice that measures your HRV levels and gives you a sense of how your body is actually responding to stresses in real time, throughout your day!

And today I am sitting down with the CEO and founder of Get Lief, Rohan Dixit. And we are talking not only about his technology, but his past as a neuroscientist, and how he came to wanting to execute on this idea of giving people access to this new language within their system. Rohan Dixit is an entrepreneur, a neuroscientist (and of course, the founder of Lief), and today we are having an incredibly fascinating conversation about HRV and the secret language that exists within your body! You’re not going to want to miss it!

Key Takeaways:

[:58] About today’s episode.

[3:10] Welcoming Rohan Dixit to the podcast!

[3:52] Rohan gives some background on who he is.

[4:41] Has Rohan always been an entrepreneur?

[5:00] Rohan takes us through the journey of Get Lief.

[7:20] In terms of running a business, what have been some of Rohan’s biggest learning moments?

[8:14] What is the Lief?

[8:43] What heart rate variability (HRV) is and what it indicates.

[9:20] Why we use Lief with our patients.

[9:52] Has Rohan seen specific patterns through the Lief that are stressing people out that he did not expect?

[11:35] Rohan highlights some of the fastest ways to increase your HRV levels through the Lief.

More About Rohan Dixit

Lief Therapeutics was founded in 2012 as a tool to make evidence-based research in HRV biofeedback accessible to all of us in our daily lives. Before Lief, Rohan Dixit (Founder, CEO) was researching meditation at The Harvard-MIT-MGH Martinos Center of Neuroscience at Stanford Medical Center, building machine learning algorithms from EEG data he gathered from monks in Tibet. The idea of Lief came to Rohan one day when he crafted his own personal anxiety tool with a stethoscope and his girlfriend’s bra. It was a prototype to combine mindful techniques with heart rate biofeedback. That primitive combination of materials evolved into the sophisticated biosensing patch Lief is today. Jun 25, 2019

If you’ve listened to the podcast before, you know that I have a real interest in this concept called biohacking — the things that we can do to alter and optimize our own physiology. And one of the things I have talked about in the past with respect to biohacking is the need to protect ourselves from blue light. Blue light is the type of toxic light that is produced by our phones and our computer screens that can throw off our circadian rhythm and cause damage to our mitochondria (the little powerhouses in our cells that produce energy). So, if blue light can impact our mitochondria negatively, is there a type of light that can impact them positively? Turns out, there is! Red light therapy actually enables your mitochondria to become more efficient — with that just being one of the many benefits red light therapy produces.

My guest today, Scott Nelson, is going to take us on a deep dive of this topic! Scott is the co-founder of Joovv, the first company to develop a full body light therapy device designed for home use. Prior to starting Joovv, Scott spent his entire professional career in leadership positions in some of the largest medical device companies in the world.

One of the things I love about Joovv is that it is really a device and an opportunity for people to have some agency and control over optimizing mitochondrial health without more supplementation! Everyone wants to know what we can do with diet and lifestyle, but the reality is that lifestyle (and the things that we expose ourselves to every day) can really move our health in a positive direction if you know what they are — and that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about today! We discuss some of the conditions and psychological outcomes that red light therapy can help with, how exactly it all works, and how to use the Joovv to take your health to an entirely new level!

Key Takeaways:

[1:12] About today’s episode.

[3:52] Welcoming Scott Nelson to the podcast!

[4:33] Scott gives an overview of what Joovv is all about and how he and his fellow co-founders teamed up to create it.

[6:46] What is red light therapy?

[10:40] Is there a difference in between using an at-home device such as the Joovv or sitting in an infrared sauna?

[13:17] What types of light are problematic to our bodies? And why does blue light get a bad rap?

[17:00] How red light helps our cells overcome modern day stressors and shifts our immune system from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory.

[19:18] What do the Joovv devices look like? And what is the experience of being in front of red light like?

[21:41] What is Joovv modular?

[22:59] When using the Joovv’s handheld device (called the Joovv Go), is there a best place to target the red light for the most impactful benefits?

[25:13] The influence that red light therapy and the Joovv can have on sleep.

[28:09] Scott recommends other therapeutics that are synergistic with red light therapy!

[31:12] How are clients of Joovv using the red light and near-infrared therapy? What is it helping to address in their lives?

[33:02] Scott’s favorite bio-hacking tools.

[36:46] Scott’s key-performance indicators!

Jun 18, 2019

Sleep, access to nature, consistent play, nutrient density, mindset work, are some of the foundational core pieces to your health. But the nature piece is usually the one that creates the greatest degree of stress in the patients that I see. And when it comes to knowing what to look for and how to actually enjoy the outdoors… sometimes it actually requires that we go a little bit deeper. It requires us exploring and unpacking the concept — and that’s exactly what we are going to do today!

It is my pleasure to welcome my friend and colleague to the podcast, Dr. Cyndi Gilbert. Cyndi is a naturopathic doctor, author, and plant whisperer. She and I graduated together 12 years ago from naturopathic medicine and currently, she is celebrating the release of her brand new book, Forest Bathing. Cyndi has been studying forest bathing and herbal medicine since she first sat under a maple tree and ate red clover flowers as a child. She’s also a faculty member at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, and she has taught botanical medicine and philosophy there for over 10 years.

Cyndi is truly a wealth of knowledge! And as you will hear from this interview, forest bathing is not necessarily as simple as stepping into a forest. Forest bathing and observing nature can exist on so many different levels. In this episode, we not only talk about some of the core elements to look for as you are engaging with the forest or going out, into the great outdoors but we also discuss the pheromones that trees release, how this actually impacts your health, the notion of a ‘wood wide web,’ the world of fungi, and actually enabling communication to happen between a variety of different trees. This is the perfect episode to tune into on the brink of summer, so I invite you all to come and listen in on the conversation!

Key Takeaways:

[1:30] About today’s episode and fantastic guest, Dr. Cyndi Gilbert.

[4:40] Welcoming Dr. Cyndi Gilbert!

[5:46] Cyndi gives us the “coles notes” version of how she got into naturopathic medicine and how she got to where she is today!

[9:30] What is forest bathing?

[11:06] Cyndi takes us through some of the deeper nuances of forest bathing (beyond just getting outside)!

[14:22] How the smells of nature impact your health, body, and mental state.

[18:39] Cyndi highlights the various ways to forest bathe depending on the season!

[21:35] The importance of children connecting to — and exploring — nature, and how we can learn from how children interact with nature, as adults.

[26:00] Cyndi introduces us to the layers of the energetics of the forest, the consciousness and communication of trees, and the world and role of fungi.

[32:35] Cyndi gives some examples of where the Doctrine of Signatures is present.

[37:29] Are there any cool apps people can bring along with them when they first go forest bathing?

[42:06] Dr. Cyndi Gilbert’s key performance indicators!

[45:00] Where to find Cyndi and her book online!

My guest today has not been on The Entrepology Podcast since episode 20! Katrina Bos is an author and all-around wise woman.

Katrina is a mathematician by background and she is currently in Guadalupe having sold all of her life possessions as she travels around the world in search of the experience that happens when you surrender to the universe. I absolutely like the juxtaposition between the structure of a background in mathematics and the fluidity and flexibility that can happen when you start to integrate life’s lessons in a strategic way.

My conversation with Katrina is a long one — but there wasn’t one part of the podcast I could do away with — it was wisdom-bomb after wisdom-bomb! We talk about the journey that women go through as the student, the householder, the forest dweller, and the sage — as well as the importance of embracing and honouring each of these pieces in our evolution as wise women. We discuss her online course, the Radiant Woman; the idea of embracing feminine strength, acting out of our feminine wisdom, and listening to your deep wisdom; and so, so much more. I definitely recommend you listen in to this one!

Key Takeaways:

[2:00] About today’s conversation!

[4:00] Welcoming Katrina Bos back to The Entrepology Podcast!

[4:36] Katrina re-introduces herself and takes us through her journey.

[8:33] From mathematician to free traveler: How and why Katrina did it.

[17:39] Katrina speaks on surrendering to the experience and how structure enables flexibility.

[19:27] Katrina explains the different phases of life a woman goes through (the student, the householder, the forest dweller, and the sage), and how she embraced her next phase in life.

[23:53] Megan’s recent experience that illustrates the general lack of consideration for the wisdom of individuals as they age.

[25:13] Katrina’s thoughts on the problem in our society about the lack of spiritual growth and what that means.

[30:18] Do men and women go through their phases of life differently? And how so?

[33:52] Embracing feminine strength, the wisdom of the woman, honoring your cycle, leveraging time, acting out of our feminine wisdom, and being vulnerable in your home.

[43:43] What started happening when Katrina began embracing and listening to her deep wisdom.

[49:03] About Katrina’s online course, the Radiant Woman.

[57:17] Take our new quiz on Entrepology Performance Labs!

[58:24] Katrina’s key-performance indicators!

More About Katrina Bos

Katrina Bos is a Canadian speaker, author, and spiritual wellness expert. After getting a Bachelor of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo — where she minored in philosophy and spirituality — Katrina moved on to the small-town life when she married a farmer and raised two children.

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of the 1990s, she realized with the help of a guru that it was time for change. Ten years later, cancer-free, Katrina published her first book What if You Could Skip the Cancer? (2009), in which she talks about the changes she had to make that led to her miraculous recovery.

As her awareness and knowledge grew, Katrina developed an interest in Tantra. Her second book, Tantric Intimacy: Discover the Magic of True Connection (2017), redefines love, intimacy, and relationships and brings the world of sacred sexuality into our everyday lives.

If I asked you to measure your inner badass, what would you say? Or, if I asked you what the objective data was that supported your badass status, would you have an answer?

My guest today is the Director of Sales of a company called WAVi — Paul Sorbo. The WAVi is an incredibly fascinating piece of technology that can actually measure one’s state of badass — because it actually measures brain activity. The WAVi is an EEG scanner which enables us to actually measure raw brain waves to get a sense — of not only the amplitude of connectivity — but also the types and density of waves that we are seeing within the brain. In short: what we can actually do with the WAVi scanner is measure how well your brain is working. And, to me, the most badass feature of any individual is what actually happens between their ears.

So, if you have an interest in how you can actually start to optimize your brain health; how you can clarify your ability to think and execute; and quite literally how we can measure your human potential with some really amazing, well-established, FDA-approved, extremely researched tools — then my friends, we have an episode for you.

Tune in to find out more about how you can optimize your brain performance!

Key Takeaways:

[1:22] About today’s episode.

[4:25] Paul introduces the WAVi brain scanner and its mission.

[6:22] What is the WAVi? What does it look like?

[8:37] What is an EEG? And what does it measure?

[9:55] When measuring brain performance, what is the WAVi actually measuring?

[11:51] What are the tests conducted with the WAVi? What do they indicate?

[12:46] What kinds of things does Paul see that helps improve scores with the WAVi?

[15:47] Has Paul looked at correlations between heart rate variability and performance in the brain?

[16:35] How I plan on leveraging the WAVi at my clinic!

[20:29] The awesome opportunity that WAVi provides.

[22:07] What has been the most astounding correlation Paul has witnessed in regards to improving brain performance?

[25:45] Has Paul done any studies on the influence of alcohol on brain performance?

[27:57] The next frontier: measuring brain performance, optimizing the human body, and biohacking.

[30:40] What are some of the key clinical questions that influential biohackers are asking themselves? What are they interested in knowing from an interventional perspective?

More About Paul Sorbo

Paul Sorbo is a serial entrepreneur and adventurer. Paul started his entrepreneurial journey at the early age of 19, owning and operating nutritional stores, while also pursuing his degree in Biochemistry and Developmental Biology. Originally wanting to continue his education in Medicine, he realized that through nutrition and preventive healthcare, i.e. diet, nutrition and exercise, he could bring more good to the world by educating people rather than treating them.

He continued to grow his nutritional stores with his team and by focusing on the people rather than the money, they reached the top two locations in the country regarding total revenue. After ending his retail journey, Paul wanted to be able to reach more people and provide the tools to help them be successful with their nutrition while keeping up with their busy lifestyles. He eventually teamed up with his business partner and began growing Go Mix Technology, a revolutionary delivery method for supplements and nutrition on the go.

After losing his grandfather to dementia, Paul has always had a passion for living a healthy lifestyle and had the opportunity to be involved with a Boulder-based company WAVi, founded on the prevention of Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Serving as the Vice President of Sales for WAVi, they are on a mission to help provide easy and reliable information about brain performance ranging from age management to concussion information. His philosophy “we look at just about every other marker in the human body — heart, lungs, kidneys — but we don’t look at the thing that runs it all?” embodies what WAVi’s mission of bringing quick, fast, and affordable information of brain performance to everyone.

When Paul isn’t working, you will find him either on the ski slopes, working out, or spending time with family and friends. Paul continues to advocate for young entrepreneurs and businessmen and women. As someone who didn’t “fit the mold,” he advocates that if you’re passionate about something, work for it; the only one stopping you from your dreams is you.

Apr 30, 2019

In today’s episode, my colleague, Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi, ND from the Entrepology Performance Labs is joining me! We’re going to be talking about the benefits of self-compassion, what it actually means, and how to truly begin to engage in it.

So many of us have this dialogue in our heads that self-compassion is something that will slow us down. If any part of you feels like, “Ugh, I don’t have time to go there,” or, “It’s not for me,” when I mention self-compassion — let me tell you this: this podcast has been created entirely for you. The thing about self-compassion is that it’s an act of leadership — not only to yourself; but towards your team, your family, and all those you influence. In fact, moving to that next level of your life will require that how you engage in self-compassion starts to change.

Self-compassion is not pouring a glass of wine at the end of the day, self-compassion is not (necessarily) having a bubble bath or getting your nails done; self-compassion is about the way that you speak to yourself. And I cannot think of anyone better than Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi to take us through the neuroscience of self-compassion today!

Key Takeaways:

[1:30] About today’s episode with my colleague, Dr. K.

[4:42] Welcoming Dr. K. to the podcast!

[5:35] Yashar gives some context about why he is particularly passionate about this topic.

[9:02] What does self-compassion actually mean?

[11:02] How to start getting into the mindset of self-compassion, and the three pillars of self-compassion.

[14:54] How Dr. K. helps interrupt the limiting beliefs in those who feel like they don’t have enough time for self-compassion.

[21:22] How to start facilitating a culture of self-compassion in a leadership role.

[24:29] Dr. K. dives into the three systems of managing our emotions in the brain and their importance in helping us renew our minds so we can execute at our highest level.

[32:00] How we can start to move forward with engaging in self-compassion.

I’m so excited about today’s guest! Jessica Ching is the CEO and founder of Eve Medical — a company that makes devices so that women can do cervical screening in the privacy of their own home. She has seriously done something incredible for women’s health by acknowledging the fact that not all women want to go into their doctor’s office, spread their legs, and have a cervical screen done by someone else! In my books, this makes her a true pioneer and entrepreneur of the most real sort.

And one of the many reasons why I’m so excited to have Jessica on today is because she never intended to live this journey at all — in fact, she and her co-founder came up with this product idea while they were still in school and she just couldn’t let it go. She’s a great example of someone who became an entrepreneur as a result of need and passion to put something into the marketplace that would serve people in a really big way.

In this episode, Jessica talks openly about her journey as an entrepreneur; the huge roadblocks that they had to overcome in order to get their product to market; and why if she had quit early on, it never would have been able to change women’s lives the way that it has.

Key Takeaways:

[1:02] About today’s guest!

[2:47] Welcoming Jessica to the podcast!

[3:33] What Jessica’s original vision for her career was and how that evolved into what she’s built today.

[6:19] Was Jessica always an entrepreneur?

[7:52] So what is the Eve Kit? How does it work?

[9:30] Did the medical community welcome Jessica’s idea with open arms for finding a solution to a common problem?

[13:58] The critical parts to getting your product or service out there as an entrepreneur.

[16:20] Challenges Jessica has run up against when trying to create the Eve Kit.

[18:42] How Jessica and her co-founder raised Capitol to get up and running.

[20:51] Where did Jessica and her partner get the advisement that enabled them to know what next steps to take?

[22:50] One of the biggest failures/learning opportunities that Jessica and her partner have had in the development of the Eve Kit.

[25:52] About the Eve Kit that is currently available for purchase online!

[27:10] What it’s like to be a female founder in an early-stage company while raising a child! How Jessica has found balance between the two.

[30:37] Did Jessica struggle to communicate to her investors that she was expecting?

[32:38] The biggest pleasant surprise for Jessica during her entire journey.

[35:15] Jessica’s key performance indicators!

More About Jessica Ching

Jessica Ching is the Co-Founder and CEO of Eve Medical, a social enterprise dedicated to improving women’s health. Following her passion to integrate design and healthcare, she founded Eve Medical after graduating from OCAD University’s Industrial Design program. Since then, she and her team have brought a self-sampling device (HerSwab) and home screening system (Evekit.com) from early concept to commercial launch.

The Eve Kit is a home-based screening service that remotely connects users, doctors, and labs for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. It enables women to easily and reliably collect their own DNA samples from home to screen for common STIs, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is known to cause cervical cancer and Chlamydia and Gonorrhea (which can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility if not treated). Home collected samples are then sent to an accredited lab for testing, and results are provided to the patient through an online secure portal. This saves time, provides privacy, and minimizes invasiveness, which are some of the root barriers to screening women face.

Through Eve Medical, Jessica hopes to improve access to screening, in a patient-centered way, for women on a global scale. Jessica was honored as one of Canada’s Inspiring Fifty women in STEM in 2018 and named one of Canada’s Top 25 Women of Influence in 2017. Her work at Eve Medical has been profiled in the Globe & Mail, Canadian Business, Reader’s Digest and Chatelaine.

Today we are going solo on The Entrepology Podcast — and I’m going to be really clear about what this episode is about! If you have an abundant, unlimited resource of energy in your life and are completely dialed in on systems that radically restore your body on a daily basis … then this episode may not be for you. If, however, you are in a very busy phase of life; are very passionate about what you’re trying to produce and put out into the world; are juggling more than one ball in the air with respect to kids, work, and family; don’t sleep nearly enough; and wish you had a heck-of-a-lot more energy… you may want to stay tuned in!

For the next thirty minutes or so, I’m going to be talking to you about something that we have developed in our clinic, Entrepology Performance Labs, called the ‘radical restoration system.’ Within this system, there are three key pillars; the three Rs that I use with my patients to help them renew, recover, and restore their body on a daily basis. With just a few tweaks to our lifestyle, our mindset and to the way that we have always dealt with recovery we can tap into a whole new world of physiological and energetic abundance.

Key Takeaways:

[:16] About today’s solo episode!

[2:12] Why you might be thinking about rest and recovery all wrong.

[7:13] How to start approaching rest and recovery in a completely new way.

[10:22] The three Rs of radical restoration: renew, recover, and restore.

[11:30] Renew. The three, important Ms (mouth, mindset, and movement) you have control over in the renew process.

[14:53] Recover. The three Ss (sleep, Saturdays, and the sympathetic nervous system) to leverage in your life.

[23:46] Restore. The three key elements that need to exist for us to restore effectively: the three Ds (deep and prolonged, destination, and distraction-less).

[27:16] Summarizing the three pillars of radical restoration: renew, recover, and restore.

[27:40] Why recovery is different for everybody.

[29:45] Thanks for listening to this week’s episode! Let us know how you are implementing these practices in your life for a better you!

Apr 2, 2019

If you’re honest with yourself, have you ever had those days where you totally just want to quit? Where you want to sit on the couch instead of seeing your trainer, eat potato chips instead of the salad — or, most of all, desperately want to push pause on this entrepreneurial journey? I know I’ve wanted to do some of these things at certain times in my own journey... but, I didn’t know what to do about it. One of the things I’ve struggled with the most is knowing when to actually call it quits.

My guest today, Lynn Marie Morski, says that quitting is — in fact — her superpower. She is a medical doctor, a lawyer, and many other things — but most excitingly, she is spreading her message to the world about when you need to say it’s over for things that are no longer serving you. Her book and business, Quitting by Design, is all about the art of quitting — when you should quit, quitting as a tool to carve out a successful life, finding your ‘why,’ and forming new, healthy habits.

What we’re going to get into today is when it’s actually the right time to call it quits! All of us, at some point, have felt this before — and I’m really excited today to jump into this universal topic with Lynn Marie Morski!

Key Takeaways:

Lynn Marie and I challenge you to follow her steps in calling it quits for at least one thing in your life that is causing you unnecessary stress. My guest today, Andrea Nakayama, is someone I’ve been super excited to bring on to the podcast! What I was so struck by when I first met her was not only her story and her resilience, but the incredible business that she built, coming out the other side of her story.

Andrea is the founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance and has had over 3,500 practitioners move through her program! Andrea is a nutritionist by background, but what makes her so effective as both as a clinician and as a teacher for practitioners is her natural knack and ability to take complex, integrative ideas and bring them down and use language that makes them so simple for all of us to understand.

In this episode, we talk about the fundamentals of building a scalable business and being an entrepreneur and how to assess what diet you should be picking up in this massive landscape of diets! Andrea dives deep into the topic of bio-individuality, explains how all areas of our health are interconnected, and how to aim for healing in your health journey rather than reaching for the often unobtainable “ideal.”

Key Takeaways:

[:58] About today’s episode with Andrea Nakayama.

[2:12] Welcoming Andrea to the podcast!

[2:50] Andrea tells us her journey as an entrepreneur and the story behind her success.

[9:08] Why you need to be vulnerable and challenged to grow, reach your true potential, and find your purpose.

[12:16] Andrea talks about the sentiment that ‘when our purpose is bigger than ourselves, it gives us the power we need to “climb that mountain”’ — and it applies to not only our business but our health.

[13:50] Andrea tells us more about her businesses, the Functional Nutrition Alliance and Functional Nutrition Lab.

[14:07] What makes functional nutrition so unique and individualized.

[17:46] Andrea explains the concept of bio-individuality and why you do not have to place yourself in a dietary box.

[23:58] Andrea explains the difference between evidence-enslaved vs. evidence-informed.

[27:37] Was Andrea always a teacher?

[27:51] How all areas of your health are interconnected.

[30:01] Where Andrea starts with patients with respect to their health.

[33:28] Andrea’s health-related non-negotiables.

[35:28] Andrea’s key performance indicators!

[39:47] Where to learn more about what Andrea is up to!

More About Andrea Nakayama

Andrea Nakayama is an internationally known Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and speaker who is leading a movement to transform the health industry into a system that WORKS, empowering patients and practitioners alike with the systems and tools of Functional Nutrition. Her passion for this nutrition revolution came as a result of a personal family tragedy. Her young husband, Isamu, was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor while she was just seven weeks pregnant with their only child.

It was in overcoming his prognosis of six months and prolonging his life for another two years that Andrea’s expanding interest in food as personalized medicine became her full-time passion and purpose. Andrea formed Functional Nutrition Lab in 2012 to further educate health practitioners in both the science and physiology of nutrition and in the art of the Functional Nutrition practice, providing professionals of diverse backgrounds with advanced tools and the depth of knowledge necessary to effect substantive changes in the lives of their own clients and patients as she has.

As her reach and impact have grown, Andrea has focused her mission onto personalized medicine as a means of transforming healthcare at large, delivering to each person the opportunity to take their health into their own hands, thereby gaining more ownership over their everyday choices in relation to their signs, symptoms and ultimate health. Andrea is celebrated as a leader in the field of Functional Nutrition because of her unique ability to teach and inspire practitioners and patients alike. Andrea synthesizes art and science, empathy and physiology, and intuition and problem solving into a system that truly helps people get to the root cause of their illness, create a path towards wellness, and find their way back to life.

It is an honour to have my friend and colleague Lori Kennedy back on The Entrepology Podcast! What I love about having Lori on is because it feels like we’re both just sitting here with a glass of wine, shooting back and forth about what it takes to be an optimized entrepreneur, how to support people in living their best possible lives, and getting completely real on our very own struggles as we attempt to do these things in our own life.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of being on Lori’s podcast, The Business of Becoming, where we started to talk about what it really takes to grow a business. Today, we’re going to contrast that conversation by talking about how to avoid burnout — because working harder and hustling is not necessarily what makes us strong and effective entrepreneurs. Working smartly with ease and strategy — and by confronting the things that are getting in the way of our optimal energy — that’s how we truly achieve greatness.

Tune in to hear all of Lori’s nuggets of wisdom on how to avoid burnout, truly show up to your business, and up your game — personally and professionally!

Key Takeaways:

[1:00] About today’s episode with my friend Lori Kennedy!

[2:46] About our conversation on Lori’s podcast, The Business of Becoming, and how we’re continuing the conversation today.

[3:10] Lori introduces herself and talks about what she’s been up to lately!

[4:57] Lori describes what it means to “kick it up a few levels” or “up your game.”

[10:29] What Lori has changed in her life to up her game.

[13:45] About Lori’s self-care rituals in the morning and why they work so well for her.

[19:37] The science and opportunity cost behind decision making.

[20:26] How long it took for Lori to find the rhythm of avoiding burnout and showing up to your business.

[28:24] How Lori has offloaded some of her responsibilities and her recommendations on how you can too.

[34:48] The difference between ease and easy!

[37:36] How guilt and shame have served Lori’s journey as an entrepreneur.

[41:32] Is dealing with all your sh*t a prerequisite to being a successful entrepreneur?

[43:37] Lori’s key performance indicators!

It is difficult to be a badass business person rocking it in the real world if you don’t get to sleep at night. And while my issues throughout the course of the night are caused by three small people who like to come and visit me, not everyone has the natural gift of being able to sleep anytime, anywhere. I can fall asleep at a moment’s notice when I don’t have people crawling on me, but I recognize that this may not be the case for everyone…

My guest today, Christine Hansen, is an expert at getting people to sleep. She is the founder of the business Sleep Like A Boss and she works with busy people and entrepreneurs to help them be able to achieve sleep, restoration, rebuilding — and all the things that happen when you finally get to that special place.

In this episode, Christine and I got totally real on some of the very specific things you need to do to actually get a good night’s sleep. We talk about how much you should be sleeping, whether you should — or should not — be using sleep apps, what you should be feeling in the morning to know you actually had a successful night’s sleep, and some of the important tests and assessments that Christine goes through in her own practice when working with clients to find out what the cause of their sleep dysfunctions may happen to be.

Today's episode is brought to you by my friends at Fullscript.

Fullscript is one of my favourite applications that I use in my practice. For my patients, the benefit is that it enables them to order their supplements online, have them delivered right to their door with total and great ease. They even have this really cool function that reminds patients when they need to reorder. It's amazing for adherence and most importantly makes this whole notion of taking things that much easier. For practitioners, it takes the nightmare out of managing inventory and improves patient adherence to what they are supposed to be taking to get them better. I am obsessed with user experience. How do we make accessing health easier for the people who are trying to consume it? Fullscript has solved that problem and for that reason, I am a huge fan. Ask your natural health care provider about Fullscript at your next appointment.
