Today’s episode is super fun. I’m hanging out with Shari Caplan, a traditionally trained medical doctor who has come to embrace functional medicine and the role that adequately balanced hormones play in our lives. She has an incredible clinic in Toronto that integrates medicine, meditation, movement, and all of the things that make us healthy, all under one roof.

In our interview, we get into the nuances of hormones and how hormones influence your neurology, your digestion, your vitality and your capacity to think clearly. We also took a spin on this that is supported by medical literature but is infrequently spoken about, namely the effects of concussions and brain trauma on your hormonal health.

If you know someone who has a traumatic brain injury, have kids that are playing sports, or you yourself have ever bumped your noggin, this is the interview for you.

Key Takeaways:

[3:00] Dr. Caplan’s personal hormonal health concerns led her to functional medicine.

[7:26] Dr. Caplan loves treating the root cause and whole person.

[10:29] We tend to dismiss the most important steps to good health. Do we need to change the compensation model to encourage more MDs to incorporate functional medicine?

[15:16] How can traumatic brain injury be related to hormone imbalances?

[22:31] Brain inflammation shuts down the ability to produce hormones.

[26:34] Hormones help with repair and regeneration.

[31:20] What hormone tests should you have done?

[33:07] Conventional medicine overlooks the gut-brain connection.

[36:38] Eat real food. Manage stress. Balance your hormones and replace deficient nutrients.

[39:36] Dr. Caplan’s legacy is to shift people’s health for the better.

[40:15] Health is more than the absence of disease.

[40:40] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[41:01] Let’s look at Dr. Kaplan’s key performance indicators!

[43:36] Here’s how to follow Dr. Kaplan.

Have you ever felt like you just need a detox? Like maybe you should stop eating for three days or down a boatload of charcoal or something? People come into my office every day asking for help with detox.

I wanted to bring someone onto the podcast who understands detox. Josh Gitalis understands exposure and deals with the process of detox on a daily basis in his own practice. He has developed a series of online programs to help you identify exposures in your own life. Josh is also a holistic nutritionist and has a background as a trainer.

This is a fantastic interview because we balanced practicality and what you can do on a daily basis with the detox strategies that you can implement several times per year to really cleanse your system.

Key Takeaways:

[2:46] When Josh was a personal trainer he realized that many of his clients were only interested in “fitness” and not in true health. He found holistic nutrition at a personal training conference.

[5:47] Toxins will prevent healing.

[8:17] Parents need to be aware of all the sources of toxins that their children can be exposed to very early on in life.

[9:47] What is a detox?

[12:26] Not everyone has the same capacity for natural detoxification.

[14:29] Should we all be doing targeted detoxes?

[15:38] There are things that you can do to support detoxification daily.

[17:29] Emotions can become toxic.

[18:53] We must be drinking good, clean water.

[19:59] Josh can help his clients design a personalized detox protocol.

[25:53] Josh uses activated charcoal for acute situations, not for long term detox.

[28:33] What about juice cleanses?

[30:34] Fasting has many benefits, but you should be intentional about it.

[33:18] Josh believes that some fashionable detox methods are not effective.

[35:31] What time of year should you do a detox?

[36:42] What does Josh want his legacy to be?

[37:39] Health is a continuum.

[39:48] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[40:09] Let’s look at Josh’s key performance indicators!

[45:42] Here’s how to follow Josh.

If there is one topic that is a taboo pertaining to women’s health, it is our reproductive rights. More specifically, the birth control pill. This is a topic that I have tried to pull guests into in past episodes, but no one quite wants to touch it. Well, there is one person that I knew would be brave enough to go there. Dr. Jolene Brighten’s area of expertise is understanding the hormonal environment of the women she treats and the impacts of their medications, including the birth control pill. Dr. Brighten is a naturopathic doctor that practices on the West Coast of the United States. She has written several books and has made a career of understanding women’s hormonal health. In today’s episode, we talk about the pill, the good and the bad, to give you a balanced and informed approach. We talk about Post Birth Control Syndrome, some of the symptoms you should be watching for if you are on the pill and some natural alternatives if you decide this is not the approach to birth control that you want to take.

Key Takeaways:

[3:12] Dr. Jolene was working in DNA technology when she found naturopathy.

[9:00] Dr. Jolene wrote a book about postpartum healing, as well as several others.

[10:56] Women need more healthcare options.

[12:07] Why did Dr. Jolene decide to self-publish her first book, and go through a publisher the next time?

[14:24] Understanding what drives her has been key to Dr. Jolene’s success.

[16:00] The birth control pill has been instrumental in how women have been able to progress in society.

[20:01] The pill has a dark history.

[22:00] What health issues can be caused by the birth control pill?

[29:17] Is it bad if you’ve been on the pill for a long time?

[35:52] If you aren’t ready to come off the pill, there are some things to watch for.

[41:35] There are natural alternatives to the pill.

[47:40] Health is feeling in alignment with yourself.

[48:25] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[48:47] Let’s look at Dr. Jolene’s key performance indicators!

The last time I had a chance to chat with this particular guest we were on a bus on our way to Banff because we sit on a medical advisory committee together. Dr. Leigh Arseneau has the capacity to take any health concept and dig deeper and deeper. We went off on tangents; we found ourselves in holes but the key thing that happened in our conversation today was that we managed to consistently paddle upstream. If you are looking for the answers and the pill that matches the outcome, this is not the interview for you.

Today we went up the stream and around the corner to my favorite place to hang out: we tried to understand why disease develops in the first place. We got into the functional medicine matrix, we talked epigenetics, we looked at molecular and cellular biology, we talked about precision medicine as the future of medicine and we looked at some of the predictive biomarkers that we need to understand in order to predict disease decades before it comes into play. If you are interested in performance and health from a preventative standpoint, this is the interview for you.

Key Takeaways:

[3:16] Dr. Arseneau got into functional medicine because it fit a vision that he had.

[5:10] How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?

[9:29] We must consider immune and inflammatory markers. The gastrointestinal system is central to health.

[12:03] Hormone imbalance is an effect, not a primary cause.

[13:13] Look beyond your diagnosis.

[17:19] To prevent disease, you need to become informed.

[19:16] What are the three most important lifestyle factors you need to be aware of to stay healthy?

[20:40] Multi-tasking is not healthy.

[25:52] The future of healthcare is precision medicine.

[30:04] Prevention medicine is cost-effective.

[30:21] It’s important to ask why it is that right now the focus is kept on treating diseases rather than preventing them.

[30:39] It takes commitment to maintain your health. You must invest in yourself and in your family.

[35:46] Should everyone be on supplements?

[37:49] What does everyone need to upregulate in their systems?

[39:35] Some people will need extra detoxification support.

[40:37] Avoiding electronics at night is beneficial.

[43:21] Dr. Arseneau wants his legacy to be making an impact on humanity through his God-given gifts. He hopes that others will do the same.

[44:55] Health is a state of mind. Health is a choice.

[46:09] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[46:31] Let’s look at Dr. Arseneau’s key performance indicators!

[50:34] Here’s how to follow Dr. Arseneau.
