Today’s interview is with a fellow Naturopathic Doctor, Marie Matheson. Marie practices in Ottawa and the almost exclusive focus of her practice is Lyme disease and associated chronic infections. While you may at first glance think that this doesn’t apply to you, I couldn’t disagree more. You see, at the end of the day, when we back up and try to understand where disease comes from, it usually comes from two sources: infections and exposures. We don’t just talk about Lyme, we talk about this notion of stealth infections, the idea that we gain exposures at times that we don’t even recognize; and those organisms lie dormant in our systems until we are tired, until we go through trauma, until our immune systems can no longer keep them at bay. If you are a citizen of the world, then this interview is for you.
Key Takeaways:
[2:35] When Dr. Matheson’s niece was bitten by a tick it made her realize that she didn’t have the adequate knowledge to treat Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
[4:40] What is a stealth infection?
[6:13] What is Lyme disease and how does an acute manifestation differ from a chronic manifestation?
[9:20] Other insects besides ticks can carry Lyme, and it can also be sexually transmitted.
[10:55] How can you prevent these infections? Are certain people more susceptible?

[16:39] Due to lack of education, there are some controversies about Lyme and its treatment.
[20:47] Naturopathic doctors look at illness holistically. Most conventionally trained doctors won’t do that.
[24:03] How should you test for Lyme?
[26:00] A vaccine for Lyme would not be effective at preventing the illness.
[28:24] What is a spirochete? What is a biofilm?
[30:32] Lyme is a much more imminent threat than Zika.
[32:32] If you feel you have been misdiagnosed or your treatment isn’t working, you should consider that you may be dealing with Lyme.
[36:39] Treatment for acute Lyme is totally different than that for chronic Lyme.
