In today’s episode, my colleague, Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi, ND from the Entrepology Performance Labs is joining me! We’re going to be talking about the benefits of self-compassion, what it actually means, and how to truly begin to engage in it.

So many of us have this dialogue in our heads that self-compassion is something that will slow us down. If any part of you feels like, “Ugh, I don’t have time to go there,” or, “It’s not for me,” when I mention self-compassion — let me tell you this: this podcast has been created entirely for you. The thing about self-compassion is that it’s an act of leadership — not only to yourself; but towards your team, your family, and all those you influence. In fact, moving to that next level of your life will require that how you engage in self-compassion starts to change.

Self-compassion is not pouring a glass of wine at the end of the day, self-compassion is not (necessarily) having a bubble bath or getting your nails done; self-compassion is about the way that you speak to yourself. And I cannot think of anyone better than Dr. Yashar Khosroshahi to take us through the neuroscience of self-compassion today!

Key Takeaways:

[1:30] About today’s episode with my colleague, Dr. K.

[21:22] How to start facilitating a culture of self-compassion in a leadership role.

[24:29] Dr. K. dives into the three systems of managing our emotions in the brain and their importance in helping us renew our minds so we can execute at our highest level.

I’m so excited about today’s guest! Jessica Ching is the CEO and founder of Eve Medical — a company that makes devices so that women can do cervical screening in the privacy of their own home. She has seriously done something incredible for women’s health by acknowledging the fact that not all women want to go into their doctor’s office, spread their legs, and have a cervical screen done by someone else! In my books, this makes her a true pioneer and entrepreneur of the most real sort.

And one of the many reasons why I’m so excited to have Jessica on today is because she never intended to live this journey at all — in fact, she and her co-founder came up with this product idea while they were still in school and she just couldn’t let it go. She’s a great example of someone who became an entrepreneur as a result of need and passion to put something into the marketplace that would serve people in a really big way.

In this episode, Jessica talks openly about her journey as an entrepreneur; the huge roadblocks that they had to overcome in order to get their product to market; and why if she had quit early on, it never would have been able to change women’s lives the way that it has.

Key Takeaways:

[1:02] About today’s guest!

[2:47] Welcoming Jessica to the podcast!

[3:33] What Jessica’s original vision for her career was and how that evolved into what she’s built today.

[6:19] Was Jessica always an entrepreneur?

[7:52] So what is the Eve Kit? How does it work?

[9:30] Did the medical community welcome Jessica’s idea with open arms for finding a solution to a common problem?

[13:58] The critical parts to getting your product or service out there as an entrepreneur.

[16:20] Challenges Jessica has run up against when trying to create the Eve Kit.

[18:42] How Jessica and her co-founder raised Capitol to get up and running.

[20:51] Where did Jessica and her partner get the advisement that enabled them to know what next steps to take?

[22:50] One of the biggest failures/learning opportunities that Jessica and her partner have had in the development of the Eve Kit.

[25:52] About the Eve Kit that is currently available for purchase online!

[27:10] What it’s like to be a female founder in an early-stage company while raising a child! How Jessica has found balance between the two.

[30:37] Did Jessica struggle to communicate to her investors that she was expecting?

[32:38] The biggest pleasant surprise for Jessica during her entire journey.

[35:15] Jessica’s key performance indicators!

[40:02] Where to follow Jessica and Eve Medical online.

More About Jessica Ching

Jessica Ching is the Co-Founder and CEO of Eve Medical, a social enterprise dedicated to improving women’s health. Following her passion to integrate design and healthcare, she founded Eve Medical after graduating from OCAD University’s Industrial Design program. Since then, she and her team have brought a self-sampling device (HerSwab) and home screening system (Evekit.com) from early concept to commercial launch.

The Eve Kit is a home-based screening service that remotely connects users, doctors, and labs for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. It enables women to easily and reliably collect their own DNA samples from home to screen for common STIs, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is known to cause cervical cancer and Chlamydia and Gonorrhea (which can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility if not treated). Home collected samples are then sent to an accredited lab for testing, and results are provided to the patient through an online secure portal. This saves time, provides privacy, and minimizes invasiveness, which are some of the root barriers to screening women face.

Through Eve Medical, Jessica hopes to improve access to screening, in a patient-centered way, for women on a global scale. Jessica was honored as one of Canada’s Inspiring Fifty women in STEM in 2018 and named one of Canada’s Top 25 Women of Influence in 2017. Her work at Eve Medical has been profiled in the Globe & Mail, Canadian Business, Reader’s Digest and Chatelaine.

Today we are going solo on The Entrepology Podcast — and I’m going to be really clear about what this episode is about! If you have an abundant, unlimited resource of energy in your life and are completely dialed in on systems that radically restore your body on a daily basis … then this episode may not be for you. If, however, you are in a very busy phase of life; are very passionate about what you’re trying to produce and put out into the world; are juggling more than one ball in the air with respect to kids, work, and family; don’t sleep nearly enough; and wish you had a heck-of-a-lot more energy… you may want to stay tuned in!

For the next thirty minutes or so, I’m going to be talking to you about something that we have developed in our clinic, Entrepology Performance Labs, called the ‘radical restoration system.’ Within this system, there are three key pillars; the three Rs that I use with my patients to help them renew, recover, and restore their body on a daily basis. With just a few tweaks to our lifestyle, our mindset and to the way that we have always dealt with recovery we can tap into a whole new world of physiological and energetic abundance.

Key Takeaways:

[:16] About today’s solo episode!

[2:12] Why you might be thinking about rest and recovery all wrong.

[7:13] How to start approaching rest and recovery in a completely new way.

[10:22] The three Rs of radical restoration: renew, recover, and restore.

[11:30] Renew. The three, important Ms (mouth, mindset, and movement) you have control over in the renew process.

[14:53] Recover. The three Ss (sleep, Saturdays, and the sympathetic nervous system) to leverage in your life.

[23:46] Restore. The three key elements that need to exist for us to restore effectively: the three Ds (deep and prolonged, destination, and distraction-less).

[27:16] Summarizing the three pillars of radical restoration: renew, recover, and restore.

[27:40] Why recovery is different for everybody.

[29:45] Thanks for listening to this week’s episode! Let us know how you are implementing these practices in your life for a better you!

Apr 2, 2019

If you’re honest with yourself, have you ever had those days where you totally just want to quit? Where you want to sit on the couch instead of seeing your trainer, eat potato chips instead of the salad — or, most of all, desperately want to push pause on this entrepreneurial journey? I know I’ve wanted to do some of these things at certain times in my own journey... but, I didn’t know what to do about it. One of the things I’ve struggled with the most is knowing when to actually call it quits.

My guest today, Lynn Marie Morski, says that quitting is — in fact — her superpower. She is a medical doctor, a lawyer, and many other things — but most excitingly, she is spreading her message to the world about when you need to say it’s over for things that are no longer serving you. Her book and business, Quitting by Design, is all about the art of quitting — when you should quit, quitting as a tool to carve out a successful life, finding your ‘why,’ and forming new, healthy habits.

What we’re going to get into today is when it’s actually the right time to call it quits! All of us, at some point, have felt this before — and I’m really excited today to jump into this universal topic with Lynn Marie Morski!

Key Takeaways:

[1:26] About today’s episode with Lynn Marie Morski.

[2:57] Welcoming Lynn Marie to the podcast!

[3:20] Lynn Marie explains how she got to this place in her career.

[5:05] The most powerful, impactful thing Lynn Marie has ever quit.

[6:48] Why are we so scared of quitting? Why does quitting have such a bad rap?

[9:27] Transitioning to the champion mindset through quitting.

[10:55] How to know when it’s time to call it quits.

[14:00] Marie’s steps for calling it quits.

[16:13] How to mitigate some of your fears around quitting.

[20:06] How Canada has your back with quitting!

[20:58] Understanding the emotion behind your limiting beliefs with regards to quitting.

[22:25] Lynn Marie shines a light on the sunk cost fallacy of quitting.

[30:14] On the opposite end of quitting: people who can’t commit. Marie highlights the differences between a fear of commitment vs. the ability to quit strategically.

[33:34] What’s a “mini quit?”

[39:04] Lynn Marie’s key performance indicators!

[45:19] Where to find Lynn Marie online.
