Did you know that more than 30 million Americans — that’s the entire population of Canada — suffer from fatigue and body-wide chronic pain? In particular, a condition called fibromyalgia is the end stage of leaving your body and your nervous system unrestored. It is often associated with a trauma or severe stress early on, and the constant pressures and go, go, go lifestyle that we subject our bodies to. Today, I had the chance to sit down and talk to David Brady. Dr. Brady is an expert on fibromyalgia and cellular fatigue. We got into the daily habits that you can engage in to maximize your energy, and we also talked about the types of patterns that he sees in his clinical practice that are common to people that are ending up with chronic fatigue or chronic fibromyalgia. This is a fascinating interview if you want to understand how to tap into and access more energy on a daily basis. I bet it’s not the things you are thinking of, and these are often things that you can do easily in your own life.

Key Takeaways:

[26:54] What is Heart Rate Variability?

[30:31] Dysfunction of mitochondria is associated with virtually every chronic disease.

[35:05] Most fatigue can be treated by changing lifestyle.

[38:41] It is crucial that you get adequate and predictable sleep.

Today I had the chance to speak with Carly Stein. Carly is an awesome woman who gave up her career at Goldman Sachs to follow her passion — beekeeping. Carly is an expert in this tiny little niche of producing high-quality, totally natural bee products. We’re not just talking about honey, but so many other products as well. We talked about the medicinal advantages of bee products, how to start a business related to food, what it’s like to be an entrepreneur as a woman, and how to offer a product that is totally authentic. If you have a mission and a vision of the life and business you want to grow, or just a passion for your health, this is absolutely the interview for you.

Key Takeaways:
[:30] Please join our Facebook community, Legacy, a group of bad-ass women collectively committed to leaving the world better than we found it.
[2:22] Carly’s allergic reactions to antibiotics led her to bee products.
[5:48] How did people react when Carly left her job at Goldman Sachs to start beekeeping?
[7:34] There are many bee products with long histories of medicinal use.
[10:48] If you are allergic to bee stings, you can probably still use honey and propolis.
[11:43] How can you find high-quality, raw honey?
[13:58] You must consider pesticide exposure when purchasing bee products.
[15:23] How are Beekeeper’s Naturals’ products produced?
[17:40] Carly uses her products daily.
[19:07] Does Carly use other supplements besides bee products?
[19:55] Not all bee products are high in sugar, and a study has shown that bee propolis can improve blood sugar levels.
[22:09] Honey can help you sleep.
[23:23] Carly does not recommend that children under the age of one use any bee products.
[25:01] How do you take honey for medicinal purposes?
[25:34] Since 2006, we have seen a steady decline in bee populations, and that is largely due to pesticide use.
[28:28] How much is organic certification worth? How can we support organic and biodynamic farmers?
[31:31] Make sure that your business idea can be grown in a sustainable way.
[36:04] Health is knowing how to take control of your well-being.
[36:53] Take this month’s quiz about sleep at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.
[38:01] Carly meditates each morning.
[39:26] Carly likes both fiction and nonfiction.
[39:40] How does Carly prevent and treat bee stings?
[41:12] Carly likes to surf, hike and rock-climb.
[41:25] Entrepreneurism can be learned.

Today I got to have a conversation with Rachel Maskell. Rachel is an entrepreneur, a mom, and a boss. Appropriately, her company is called Mum Boss. She does a podcast and offers amazing little mom boxes that facilitate self-care. This was a really great interview because we got underneath the hood of some of the beliefs that we carry as women that prevent us from legitimately engaging in self-care. We talked about Rachel’s non-negotiables and about her “morning pages,” which are her way of taking time to connect with her creative self. We discussed the "perfect women" and why aiming for perfection is usually the thing that holds us back. We talked about pulling together and utilizing all of these skills to move ourselves forward in life. This is the interview for you if you want to know what it is that motivates us as women, as entrepreneurs, and as mom-bosses.

Key Takeaways:
[:45] Please join our Facebook community, Legacy, a group of bad-ass women collectively committed to leaving the world better than we found it.
[3:28] Rachel’s entrepreneurship journey began through supporting her husband in his career as an entrepreneur.
[5:35] Mum Boss began as a podcast, and the topic of self-care kept coming up.
[11:03] Why is it socially acceptable to have a glass of wine after a hard day, as opposed to truly engaging in self-care?
[13:03] How does Rachel practice self-care?
[14:47] Let go of time constraints.
[16:28] We have unrealistic ideas about how to be perfect women.
[18:58] What is a mum boss?
[21:18] How can we teach our daughters the importance of self-care and help them to let go of perfectionism?
[25:41] Who are Rachel’s mom-boss mentors?
[27:19] It’s time for a new chapter in feminism.
[31:17] How do Rachel and her husband balance their love and entrepreneurism?
[34:30] Health is being able to feel your “inner gold” shining from the inside, out.
[35:30] Take this month’s quiz about sleep at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.
[36:36] Rachel’s morning routine is not consistent, but she tries to always meditate and do her “morning pages.”
[37:17] Rachel reads non-fiction.
[37:40] Rachel loves her organic, French-press coffee.
[38:06] Rachel loves to travel and do yoga.
[38:27] Do we learn to become entrepreneurs, or is it born in us?

This interview is a little bit different. Today I had the opportunity to sit down with one of my entrepreneurial superheroes, Murray Walker (also know as my dad). When at the birth of this podcast I put together a list of people I would ultimately like to interview, my dad was at the top of the list. He is the reason that I went into business, and the person who sculpted so much of my way of thinking. He is, in short, my entrepreneurial hero.

In this interview I get to ask my dad about business, and also a little bit about what he has learned from me about health. We talked about opportunity, pushing things to the next level, balancing our time, and putting things into perspective. It was tremendously insightful and I truly learned things about him that I never knew before. I hope you enjoy our conversation, too.

[6:47] When Mr. Walker saw an opportunity he fearlessly pursued it, and that has been key to his success.
[9:26] Mr. Walker had an insatiable desire to capitalize on opportunity, but he was determined to keep his life balanced.
[10:23] Be present wherever you are.
[11:05] What is “Imposter Syndrome,” and why should you get over it?
[13:40] Mr. Walker is a perfectionist, but he knows how and when to temper that tendency.
[15:13] Entrepreneurs should have the ability to recognize opportunities, enthusiasm, and some business education.
[16:49] Where did Mr. Walker receive his business education?
[18:12] Managing your time is crucial.
[19:32] Mr. Walker involved Meghan in business conversations from a very young age, but cautions parents against pushing their children into the family business.
[23:38] The nature of entrepreneurism changes from generation to generation.
[24:55] If he had unlimited energy and unlimited time, what business opportunity would Mr. Walker pursue right now?
[27:16] Food is fuel.

I fundamentally believe that when people are well they can change the world, and I work everyday to help reduce the risk of chronic disease in my patients. So when I heard today’s guest, Dr. Stephanie Seneff, speak, I knew that I had to have her on the podcast. Dr. Seneff presented me with an inconvenient truth; that the food I was eating and feeding to my family was not only killing us, but the people who were coming to see me for help. Our interview today is slightly more technical than you might be used to, but if you eat food, this interview is crucial to your survival.

Key Takeaways:

[:54] Please join our Facebook community, Legacy, a group of bad-ass women collectively committed to leaving the world better than we found it.

[4:10] Glyphosate is the most important toxic chemical in our environment and we must ban glyphosate worldwide.

[5:51] Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp.

[6:19] Some crops have been genetically modified to be resistant to RoundUp.

[6:58] How is so much glyphosate getting into our food?

[8:12] Even organic foods will contain some glyphosate.

[9:11] Why would organic lentils contain high levels of glyphosate?

[10:18] Monsanto’s own studies have shown how glyphosate accumulates in body tissue.

[12:45] Glyphosate is getting into proteins by mistake.

[14:02] In North America we do not respect the Precautionary Principle.

[14:51] Is there a link between glyphosate and autism?

[17:20] Glyphosate hit the market in 1975 but its use wasn’t widespread until the late 1990s.

[18:56] Glyphosate causes gut dysbiosis.

[20:48] How is glyphosate connected to Celiac Disease and other food allergies?

[23:21] Glyphosate crosses the placenta.

[23:39] Glyphosate is sneaking into the body in place of glycine.

[25:14] Some people are genetically more susceptible to the effects of glyphosate.

[26:33] What is the relationship between glyphosate and sulphur?

[27:17] We desperately need sun exposure.

[29:50] Glyphosate can not be washed off of produce because it is embedded in the proteins of the plants.

[31:03] It is very difficult to reduce glyphosate exposure without committing to buy organic.

[32:43] Sri Lanka banned glyphosate after it became obvious that it had killed many young agricultural workers. It will be a miracle if the U.S.A. ever bans it.

[34:28] We can test for glyphosate in our bodies with urine samples.

[35:16] Can we detox glyphosate out of our tissues?

[37:51] How can we take action to remedy the problems we have created with glyphosate use?

[41:40] Take this month’s quiz about toxicity and detox at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[42:16] Health is feeling good.

[43:08] Dr. Seneff’s morning routine includes doing a Sudoku puzzle.

Today I sat down with Adele Tevlin of Adele Wellness. Adele is a weight loss coach, cognitive behavioral therapist, and holistic nutritionist. She offers a really unique program and approach to helping people lose weight. Although we did talk about how to lose weight effectively (because it is something that we are both asked about frequently in our practices), our conversation really revolved around body image, how we optimize our energy, and thought patterns that contribute to a weight problem in the first place. We both look at weight issues not as being caused by overconsumption of calories, but by a desperate desire for dopamine. This means that weight management, body management, and getting to your ideal place all begins in your brain.

Key Takeaways:

[:51] Please join our Facebook community, Legacy, a group of bad-ass women collectively committed to leaving the world better than we found it.

[2:37] Adele helps people recognize the thoughts that get in the way of what they really want.

[4:20] Why do people overeat?

[4:56] Food addiction is very similar to other addictions.

[6:40] Some people may be more prone to food addiction because they crave more dopamine than other people.

[7:40] Commitment and readiness are crucial when attempting to change eating behaviors.

Today I’m speaking with Dr. Bradley Bush. Dr. Bush is a naturopathic physician practicing in Minnesota. In his practice he focuses on adrenal health, sleep and Lyme disease. Today we had the opportunity to talk about these factors in a really particular context. We talked about optimal neuro-endocrine balance for entrepreneurs. We talked about the reason that the digestive system is the root of everything to do with a person’s health, and we also looked at why it is that you can’t sleep. Until my personal coughing fit interrupted the discussion, we were also dipping into the epidemic of Lyme disease. This episode is jampacked, it is speaking specifically to entrepreneurs and go-getters, and you’re going to get a lot out of it.

One cool thing about Susan is that no one can escape her incredible ability to perceive their state. If you are ready to go to the next level, she’ll call you on it and take you there. Amie hosts all of her ideas on thehealthyapple.com and is the best-selling author of Eating Clean: The 21 Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body. Amie talks about being outside of her body; living a corporate lifestyle where she pushed and pushed, and then finally understanding what it meant to feel what was inside of her. Today we are talking to Dr. Denis Wilson, an integrative practitioner practicing in Florida, as well as an entrepreneur, with a passion for understanding the tempo and the temperature of life. Dr. Wilson doesn’t just have a passing interest in thyroid health, he has a thyroid syndrome named after him. He is kind, witty and knowledgeable about a topic that affects so many of us — adrenal and thyroid health. Dr. Wilson explains that the thyroid gland sets the pace of life. You won’t want to miss this episode.

Key Takeaways:

[:29] Thank you to our sponsor, Legacy.

[1:58] What influenced Dr. Wilson’s interest in thyroid and adrenal health and his journey to a holistic approach to practicing medicine?

[4:28] It really isn’t logical to expect thyroid dysfunction to show up on a blood test.

[6:39] Metabolism problems may be caused by lack of thyroid hormone, or by difficulty converting the thyroid hormone.

[7:17] 37 degrees Celsius is a good baseline body temperature.

[8:20] The creator of the TSH blood test was worried that doctors would put too much store in the test and ignore other signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.

[9:49] Toxins and stress may be playing a big role in the current thyroid dysfunction epidemic.

[11:06] Blue light is also a problem for hormone function.

[11:56] Treating adrenal fatigue sometimes cures symptoms of thyroid dysfunction.

[13:16] What exactly is adrenal fatigue?

[16:03] Not everyone who experiences stress will develop adrenal fatigue.

[17:09] How does Dr. Wilson manage stress?

[18:57] What are some common symptoms of adrenal fatigue?

[20:42] Dr. Wilson likes to try treating his patients with “potent groceries,” before running “a ton of tests.”

[22:15] Dr. Wilson uses therapies to reboot hormone pathways.

[25:19] Can someone come off of thyroid medication?

[27:16] What about autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s and Grave’s?

[28:53] How can low temperatures lead to autoimmune conditions?

[31:08] Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome is a reversible problem.

[34:02] Dr. Wilson absolutely tests temperature on every patient he sees.

[36:11] How should someone take their temperature to ensure an accurate reading?

[40:34] Health is optimal function of the body, mind and spirit.

[41:00] Take this month’s quiz about stress and adrenal fatigue at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[41:38] Dr. Wilson incorporates a really unique flashcard system into his morning routine.

[43:32] Dr. Wilson prefers to read non-fiction.

[44:05] Dr. Wilson likes Celestial Seasonings Apple and Cinnamon.

[44:52] What does Dr. Wilson do for fun?

He is about to release a book about how to craft the perfect apology. Andrew has kind eyes, a warm heart, and a whole lot of wisdom. He is equal parts compassion and call to action. [2:19] Dr. Blackwood’s parents divorced when he was 13, but that wasn’t the main thing that led him to marriage and family counseling.

[4:46] The incidence of mental health challenges is particularly high in entrepreneurs, and that is often linked to family relationships.

[6:07] To what extent does our family of origin determine our destiny?

[6:58] Awareness is so important to our success in family relationships.

[9:08] What is the difference between worry and concern?

[10:13] Is parent/child conflict a natural part of individuation?

[13:23] Family dynamics influence, but do not dictate, identity.

[17:40] There are specific characteristics that help entrepreneurs forge their own path.

[19:21] Should we all be in therapy?

[21:32] The partners of entrepreneurs have a lot of added stressors. It is helpful, but not always possible, for them to know what they are signing up for.

[25:04] Making a genuine apology is an art.

[31:29] Health is intrinsically connected to growth.

[32:08] To take this month’s quiz about stress and adrenal fatigue at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.
