How many of you have thought of mindfulness? Meditation, yoga — all of those core buzzwords — as not just acts of relaxation, but acts of leadership. This is the stance of my guest today, Paula Pyne. Paula is a consultant in the mindfulness space and her stance on the matter is that all of these elements — all of these things that cause us to focus on ourselves and who we are and to slow down — are not just tools to help accelerate the success of teams and new startups but are also acts of personal leadership.

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview with Paula because it took an entirely new position on this notion of mindfulness. If you’re the person who rolls their eyes at yoga and are really challenged to slow down in your busy life — then this interview is for you!

Key Takeaways:

[3:57] What a mindful leadership coach is and the journey that led Paula to this position.

[6:38] What is integral theory?

[8:09] The new leadership paradigm.

[10:33] Are we all born with the capacity to be leaders or is there an intuitive capacity or skill set that positions people to be more natural leaders than others?

[13:24] What do we need to tap into efficiently as individual leaders to combat a style of leadership that is focused on bullying and posturing of power?

[15:57] How the platform of leadership is shifting and what we need to do, as women, to help step into it.

[17:26] How do we gather the courage to start making change in our lives and take action?

[21:20] The challenge as a leader of creating an environment that respects patients while also remaining amply competitive in the business space.

[26:47] Paula’s advice to the young, bold, ambitious individuals that need to work on their leadership development before diving head-first into a project or career.

[28:09] What it’s like working in the discipline of positive psychology, and what Paula teaches in terms of self-care.

[30:36] Achieving health optimization through biohacking?

[31:18] How Paula defines mindfulness.

[32:50] Paula walks us through a beginner’s mindfulness exercise!

[40:43] What came up in Meghan’s heart during Paula’s mindfulness exercise.

[41:45] How Paula defines health.

[43:24] Paula’s key performance indicators!

[47:18] Where to find more about what Paula is up to.

Today’s guest is a Naturopathic doctor who practices here in Ontario. What is so fundamentally unique about what she has built is that her business is founded upon the notion of intention and female empowerment. Dr. Michelle Peris leads her business initiatives and entrepreneurial spirit from intent, her spirit, and what feels right in a way and with a bravery that I wish more people would look at and embrace. More About Michelle Peris
Dr. Michelle Peris is a Naturopathic Doctor and clinic director of The Poppy Clinic serving women in Oakville and the surrounding areas who are so over feeling sick or staying home with a sick child (again). They’re ready to try something that works—for their body. Through teaching women of all ages and life stages how to listen to their bodies and tune into the wisdom inside, Dr. Peris helps them create a life that feels good to live, with energy and passion that had been long forgotten. I was nervous for this one. I fancy myself as a pretty decent communicator, but there is nothing like inviting a communication consultant, to put that confidence to the test. Mary Shores is the author of Conscious Communications and has been working as a CEO and serious badass for the last 20 years. Her interest in language is not relegated to simply one’s vocabulary, she is equally fascinated with the neurological implications of tone and intonation. Seriously cool stuff.

Mary teaches people how to harness the power of words to change their own  mindset and the mindset of those around them. This was a super-fascinating conversation because all of us are in a position of influence — all of us are out there trying to change the world on a daily basis. If we don’t have our words to back us up, we miss out on the opportunity for greater impact.

Key Takeaways:

[3:08] About Mary Shores’ journey and how she developed an interest and curiosity in the power of communication.

[4:08] Mary’s process in coaching others in conscious communication.

[5:15] What Mary considers a negative word and her tips on how to replace these negative words.

[7:03] How do we say ‘no’ when it is appropriately respecting our boundaries and not shutting down things emotionally?

[9:20] How to harness the power of Mary’s teaching while setting out to embark on your goals and resolutions in the new year.

[10:57] Mary’s process for getting people to see what they’re grateful for.

[13:07] What is happening on a neurological basis when we engage in negative self-talk.

[15:55] The power of affirmations and why sometimes people are resistant to them.

[19:32] The important tool that is journaling and the key to patience.

[22:25] Tools in communication that Mary uses in her own life.

[24:25] Questioning the systems we create that evaluate a person’s success.

[25:20] The communication styles in adults that make Mary cringe.

[26:11] Challenge yourself to go on a complaint diet!

[27:44] The business side of things: the things leaders need to keep in mind when communicating with their team.

Have you ever wondered if everything is determined by your genes or if you have some element of control at all? There’s a 50/50 split with all patients sitting in my office; half of them really wish that they could explain all the things that are awry in their life and health through their genes, and the other half are begging for the opportunity to garner more control. The reality is: The truth lies somewhere in the middle. And that’s what we talked about today with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald.

Dr. Fitzgerald is a naturopathic doctor that I was absolutely thrilled to have on my podcast. She has extensive knowledge on the concept of epigenetics; the things we can do to change our predetermined D.N.A. and in this episode, we got into simple hacks that you can use on a daily basis to shift your entrepreneurial mindset, increase your energy, and improve your overall health. You definitely don’t want to miss this one!

[3:47] Dr. Fitzgerald tells us about her background and how she got where she is today.

[7:46] What Dr. Fitzgerald’s personal mission is what gets her up in the morning every day.

[9:50] What is Dr. Kara Fitzgerald’s primary focus from a consumer perspective?

[12:10] The interesting case of adults reacting with an immediate hypersensitivity to foods they’ve never reacted to before.

[18:38] What epigenetics is and why we all should care about it.

[24:00] Are there things that we do on a daily basis that we should or shouldn’t do that have a profound effect on the epigenetic environment within your body?

[34:30] Do you think people can do it with diet and lifestyle alone or do they need supplementation?

[38:14] Dr. Kara Fitzgerald recommendations to entrepreneurs to add to their list of habits every day.

[41:33] Dr. Fitzgerald’s initiatives to further explore these concepts and some of the programs she runs with IFM.

Welcome to 2018, everyone! I wanted to kick-start the front of January by having a little solo time with you, so this is just a short little podcast. We’re into that second week of January and this is when all those New Year’s resolutions start to dwindle, lose their fizzle, and it becomes hard to keep going.

If this is something you can relate to or you work with clients that could relate to this then this is for you! So what I want to talk about in today’s episode is: What are the things that distinguish people who consistently hit their goals from those who cannot?

Key Takeaways:

[1:23] The classic paradigm of the New Year’s resolution.

[2:04] People with a sense of purpose can get to where they want to go; the strategy behind sticking to goals.

[3:25] The challenge of January — the greatest time of the year to take a look back, reset, and refocus your goals for the coming year.

[5:19] Really good goals require really strong planning. I challenge you to do some tweaking on your goals.

[6:00] Divide your goals; creating goals that fit separate categories.

[6:21] The two types of goals: Goals that define our means, and mission-based goals.

[8:06] The main distinction between people in my practice that get better quickly from those that get stuck — purpose.

[9:53] Means-based goals vs. mission-based goals.

[13:33] My call to action to you!

I was really excited to sit down with our guest today, Dr. Andrea Maxim. She’s an entrepreneur, naturopathic doctor, and unapologetically interested in driving her entrepreneurial spirit and finding ways to have a massive impact on her profession.

In this episode, I was lucky enough to get her take on a few things: the trends she has been seeing within entrepreneurialism, where she thinks we should be investing our time and energy as we move into 2018, and the common elements that she has seen — both in her journey as well as her clients — in terms of successful outcomes.

This is a great interview because it’s that balance between business through the lens of someone who’s in healthcare — who understands the need to have boundaries and limitations in terms of how far we push. We also talk about what it means to really be an overnight success and the 10 years of work it takes to get to that place. This is an interview for people who are interested in understanding how you can become passionate about looking for a career in helping others and the type of hustle and strategy and self-investment that goes along with it.

Key Takeaways:

[3:43] Dr. Andrea Maxim takes us through the journey that got her to where she is now.

[7:04] The concept of ‘endgame’: what it means to Dr. Andrea.

[10:39] Where Dr. Andrea’s mindset of “I just know I can do it” came from and how to think optimistically.

[17:31] The importance of failing to achieve success.

[18:59] Detaching yourself from others’ opinions and Dr. Andrea’s obliger tendency with a side of rebel.

[22:20] Straddling the line between healthcare practitioner and hustling entrepreneur: Dr. Andrea’s predictions for key marketing trends for small businesses in 2018.

[26:30] Finding the balance between finding personal touch-points with clients while also limiting your access and taking a step back.

[29:11] Where Dr. Andrea plans on moving forward this coming year, where she plans to invest her time and money in terms of personal growth, and what her best personal investment has been in the past.

[34:01] An important exercise in gaining — and being open to — personal insight.

[36:13] How to filter out the noise of advice and suggestions, to process it and find the one, clear path to take.

[39:36] What Andrea would like her legacy to be.

[40:39] How Andrea describes health.

[42:03] Andrea’s key-performance indicators!

[45:05] Where to find Andrea online.

Today is a super fun interview because it was all about money — our attitudes towards it and our core beliefs about it. We segued right into the concept of ‘how do you go about spending your money, guilt-free?’

My guest today, Shannon Simmons, the author of Worry-Free Money — which just released today. She also owns The New School of Finance and she runs a series of programs online to teach the notion of financial acumen. As a new mom, she gets the pressures of the millennial, emerging entrepreneurial lifestyle and the shift that we’re seeing in our society — that is we’re moving away from the idea that everything is secure and easy to the fact that we need to have a new idea and paradigm as we approach money.

I can’t have a podcast or a business that focuses on producing healthy outcomes for people if we don’t talk about money — and that’s exactly what we did today and why I’m so excited to share this interview with you, between myself and Shannon Simmons.

Key Takeaways:

[5:46] Shannon’s book on guilt-free spending and the simple things we need to look at when it comes to having a happier financial life.

[9:20] The first step to saving to appease that fear-based scarcity mindset.

[10:24] The most important side: cutting out traditional budgeting.

[13:13] What Shannon insists you do: Spend your money for you!

[15:53] Why Shannon thinks we have such complicated emotions in the relationship we have with money.

[17:57] Everyone’s inherent need to ‘keep up’ and how Shannon maintains a healthy grip on the ‘comparison game.’

[23:43] The fundamental basics of financial literacy.

[27:23] Ratios and benchmarks people should be aware of when it comes to debt.

[30:16] Allocating cash flow and paying yourself first.

[33:56] How to get that dopamine fix without spending money and avoiding that ‘f*ck it’ moment.

[36:12] Keeping open and honest with friends, family, and children in the conversation of money.

[38:35] The negative ways parents transmit their beliefs to their children about money.

[40:39] The importance of transparency.

[41:57] The first step to changing our relationship with money.

[44:45] The sentiment of success: changing your paradigm.

As entrepreneurs, we get caught in the mindset that we can out-work or out-hustle everyone to get to the next level. When we hear that it’s important to focus and be mindful we feel that we are different. We have to hustle.

The reality is that running around like a crazy person, trying to be everything to everyone at all times, ultimately leads to burnout and ineffectiveness. Today I’m sitting down with Dave Ruel to look at the simple things — the operations of a business — to be effective and to stay healthy.

Key Takeaways:

[3:30] Dave began his first health business by selling cookbooks.

[6:25] Dave wanted to launch his own business in order to have more freedom, but he became overworked and experienced burnout.

[8:56] How do you know if you are caught in a burnout phase?

[14:38] You don’t have to hustle and grind to be a successful entrepreneur.

[16:29] You may need to go through the “burnout recovery program.”

[21:13] You must learn to manage yourself.

[23:16] This is how Dave structures his day.

[29:43] How can you connect with people without letting email take over your life?

[36:00] What software does Dave use for project management?

[37:57] There are so many options for planners and journals for entrepreneurs. Choose one that helps you prioritize.

[47:04] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[47:26] Let’s look at Dave’s key performance indicators!

Nov 28, 2017

Today’s episode is super fun. I’m hanging out with Shari Caplan, a traditionally trained medical doctor who has come to embrace functional medicine and the role that adequately balanced hormones play in our lives. She has an incredible clinic in Toronto that integrates medicine, meditation, movement, and all of the things that make us healthy, all under one roof.

In our interview, we get into the nuances of hormones and how hormones influence your neurology, your digestion, your vitality and your capacity to think clearly. We also took a spin on this that is supported by medical literature but is infrequently spoken about, namely the effects of concussions and brain trauma on your hormonal health.

If you know someone who has a traumatic brain injury, have kids that are playing sports, or you yourself have ever bumped your noggin, this is the interview for you.

Key Takeaways:

[3:00] Dr. Caplan’s personal hormonal health concerns led her to functional medicine.

[7:26] Dr. Caplan loves treating the root cause and whole person.

[10:29] We tend to dismiss the most important steps to good health. Do we need to change the compensation model to encourage more MDs to incorporate functional medicine?

[15:16] How can traumatic brain injury be related to hormone imbalances?

[22:31] Brain inflammation shuts down the ability to produce hormones.

[26:34] Hormones help with repair and regeneration.

[31:20] What hormone tests should you have done?

[33:07] Conventional medicine overlooks the gut-brain connection.

[36:38] Eat real food. Manage stress. Balance your hormones and replace deficient nutrients.

[39:36] Dr. Caplan’s legacy is to shift people’s health for the better.

[40:15] Health is more than the absence of disease.

Have you ever felt like you just need a detox? Like maybe you should stop eating for three days or down a boatload of charcoal or something? People come into my office every day asking for help with detox.

I wanted to bring someone onto the podcast who understands detox. Josh Gitalis understands exposure and deals with the process of detox on a daily basis in his own practice. He has developed a series of online programs to help you identify exposures in your own life. Josh is also a holistic nutritionist and has a background as a trainer.

This is a fantastic interview because we balanced practicality and what you can do on a daily basis with the detox strategies that you can implement several times per year to really cleanse your system.

Key Takeaways:

[2:46] When Josh was a personal trainer he realized that many of his clients were only interested in “fitness” and not in true health. He found holistic nutrition at a personal training conference.

[5:47] Toxins will prevent healing.

[8:17] Parents need to be aware of all the sources of toxins that their children can be exposed to very early on in life.

[9:47] What is a detox?

[12:26] Not everyone has the same capacity for natural detoxification.

[14:29] Should we all be doing targeted detoxes?

[15:38] There are things that you can do to support detoxification daily.

[17:29] Emotions can become toxic.

[18:53] We must be drinking good, clean water.

[19:59] Josh can help his clients design a personalized detox protocol.

[25:53] Josh uses activated charcoal for acute situations, not for long term detox.

[28:33] What about juice cleanses?

[30:34] Fasting has many benefits, but you should be intentional about it.

If there is one topic that is a taboo pertaining to women’s health, it is our reproductive rights. More specifically, the birth control pill. This is a topic that I have tried to pull guests into in past episodes, but no one quite wants to touch it. Well, there is one person that I knew would be brave enough to go there. Dr. Jolene Brighten’s area of expertise is understanding the hormonal environment of the women she treats and the impacts of their medications, including the birth control pill. Dr. Brighten is a naturopathic doctor that practices on the West Coast of the United States. She has written several books and has made a career of understanding women’s hormonal health. In today’s episode, we talk about the pill, the good and the bad, to give you a balanced and informed approach. We talk about Post Birth Control Syndrome, some of the symptoms you should be watching for if you are on the pill and some natural alternatives if you decide this is not the approach to birth control that you want to take.

Key Takeaways:

[3:12] Dr. Jolene was working in DNA technology when she found naturopathy.

[9:00] Dr. Jolene wrote a book about postpartum healing, as well as several others.

[10:56] Women need more healthcare options.

[12:07] Why did Dr. Jolene decide to self-publish her first book, and go through a publisher the next time?

[14:24] Understanding what drives her has been key to Dr. Jolene’s success.

[16:00] The birth control pill has been instrumental in how women have been able to progress in society.

[20:01] The pill has a dark history.

[22:00] What health issues can be caused by the birth control pill?

[29:17] Is it bad if you’ve been on the pill for a long time?

[35:52] If you aren’t ready to come off the pill, there are some things to watch for.

[41:35] There are natural alternatives to the pill.

[47:40] Health is feeling in alignment with yourself.

Nov 7, 2017

The last time I had a chance to chat with this particular guest we were on a bus on our way to Banff because we sit on a medical advisory committee together. Dr. Leigh Arseneau has the capacity to take any health concept and dig deeper and deeper. We went off on tangents; we found ourselves in holes but the key thing that happened in our conversation today was that we managed to consistently paddle upstream. If you are looking for the answers and the pill that matches the outcome, this is not the interview for you.

Today we went up the stream and around the corner to my favorite place to hang out: we tried to understand why disease develops in the first place. We got into the functional medicine matrix, we talked epigenetics, we looked at molecular and cellular biology, we talked about precision medicine as the future of medicine and we looked at some of the predictive biomarkers that we need to understand in order to predict disease decades before it comes into play. If you are interested in performance and health from a preventative standpoint, this is the interview for you.

Key Takeaways:

[3:16] Dr. Arseneau got into functional medicine because it fit a vision that he had.

[5:10] How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?

[9:29] We must consider immune and inflammatory markers. The gastrointestinal system is central to health.

[12:03] Hormone imbalance is an effect, not a primary cause.

[13:13] Look beyond your diagnosis.

[17:19] To prevent disease, you need to become informed.

[19:16] What are the three most important lifestyle factors you need to be aware of to stay healthy?

[20:40] Multi-tasking is not healthy.

[25:52] The future of healthcare is precision medicine.

[30:04] Prevention medicine is cost-effective.

[30:21] It’s important to ask why it is that right now the focus is kept on treating diseases rather than preventing them.

[30:39] It takes commitment to maintain your health. You must invest in yourself and in your family.

[35:46] Should everyone be on supplements?

[37:49] What does everyone need to upregulate in their systems?

[39:35] Some people will need extra detoxification support.

[40:37] Avoiding electronics at night is beneficial.

[43:21] Dr. Arseneau wants his legacy to be making an impact on humanity through his God-given gifts. He hopes that others will do the same.

[44:55] Health is a state of mind. Health is a choice.

[46:09] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

This was a very compelling interview because of the story it opened with. James Erdt transitioned from a place of darkness and crime in his youth to a way of living that inspires entrepreneurs and everyone around him to be better. This interview is somewhat like a self-help novel, but most importantly it speaks to the truth that each of us has a story of our own, and our stories enable us to do the work we are meant to do in the world.

Key Takeaways:

[2:31] When James Erdt was just fifteen he made the decision to use drugs, which changed the course of his life forever. Fifteen years later his daughter made a comment that inspired him to turn his life around.

[6:15] Bullying was influential in James’s decision to use drugs.

[8:09] We are prone to want to abuse power. As parents, we can influence our children to use their power wisely.

[10:39] How can someone with such a dark past have such a positive energy?

[12:37] People love to be listened to.

[14:11] James’s mom inspired him to work to empower women.

[16:37] People will pay money to get out of pain.

[19:22] James works with entrepreneurs who pay it forward and know how to treat money with respect.

[24:15] James has started a ranch for at-risk teen boys to help them turn their lives around like he has.

[29:53] Get comfortable being uncomfortable. To succeed, you must be willing to fail.

[31:41] What does James do on a daily basis for his health?

[35:34] Water is crucial.

[37:16] How can you start to give back and live out your mission?

[38:01] James wants his legacy to be providing a better legacy for the youth of the world.

Today’s interview is with a fellow Naturopathic Doctor, Marie Matheson. Marie practices in Ottawa and the almost exclusive focus of her practice is Lyme disease and associated chronic infections. While you may at first glance think that this doesn’t apply to you, I couldn’t disagree more. You see, at the end of the day, when we back up and try to understand where disease comes from, it usually comes from two sources: infections and exposures. We don’t just talk about Lyme, we talk about this notion of stealth infections, the idea that we gain exposures at times that we don’t even recognize; and those organisms lie dormant in our systems until we are tired, until we go through trauma, until our immune systems can no longer keep them at bay. If you are a citizen of the world, then this interview is for you.

Key Takeaways:

[2:35] When Dr. Matheson’s niece was bitten by a tick it made her realize that she didn’t have the adequate knowledge to treat Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

[4:40] What is a stealth infection?

[6:13] What is Lyme disease and how does an acute manifestation differ from a chronic manifestation?

[9:20] Other insects besides ticks can carry Lyme, and it can also be sexually transmitted.

[10:55] How can you prevent these infections? Are certain people more susceptible?

[15:40] Dr. Matheson treats a lot of truck drivers. Here’s why.

[16:39] Due to lack of education, there are some controversies about Lyme and its treatment.

[20:47] Naturopathic doctors look at illness holistically. Most conventionally trained doctors won’t do that.

[24:03] How should you test for Lyme?

[26:00] A vaccine for Lyme would not be effective at preventing the illness.

[28:24] What is a spirochete? What is a biofilm?

[30:32] Lyme is a much more imminent threat than Zika.

[32:32] If you feel you have been misdiagnosed or your treatment isn’t working, you should consider that you may be dealing with Lyme.

[36:39] Treatment for acute Lyme is totally different than that for chronic Lyme.

[40:43] Prevention is the best cure for Lyme.

[42:34] How should you remove a tick?

[45:00] Health is physical, emotional, and spiritual balance.

[47:33] Dr. Matheson wants her legacy to be that she helped to reduce suffering from chronic illness.

[53:48] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

Dr. Matheson believes in preventative medicine and the importance of determining the causal chain of illness by addressing toxicities at a cellular level. Today’s guest is someone I met at the gym, at a conference for health entrepreneurs. I had the fortunate experience of running into Dr. Vincent Pedre there at the gym and then later that day at a cocktail party, where we struck up a fascinating conversation about his transition from practicing internal medicine to practicing functional medicine, and how he healed his own digestive issues.

In today’s conversation, we go from discussing disease and the influence of the gut on chronic disease and autoimmune conditions, to discussing performance, the brain health axis, and the way that the health of our gut influences our ability to think clearly and execute profoundly every single day. This interview is not just relevant for people with digestive issues, it is relevant for anyone who is on a mission and wants to know where to start to improve their performance.

Key Takeaways:

[3:23] Dr. Pedre realized that he couldn’t offer his patients an exit strategy from the treatments he was giving them, and that drove him to functional medicine.

[6:19] Dr. Pedre realized that he could resolve his own IBS.

[9:21] Dr. Pedre mostly practices functional medicine, but he still performs screenings and recognizes his background in conventional medicine.

[10:34] This is where you can hear it from an MD: The food you eat affects your health, “100 percent!”

[13:18] Should everyone quit eating dairy and gluten?

[15:48] Changing your diet can be overwhelming, but you can do it. Find a doctor who empowers you.

[20:17] How are autoimmune conditions related to gut health?

[25:31] If you have elevated thyroid antibodies but still have normal thyroid function, you can prevent disease with lifestyle.

[28:22] How do you assess gut health? You might have gut issues and not know it.

[35:15] We think with our gut.

[39:27] Our current society is completely imbalanced.

[42:24] It’s important to learn to manage stress and cultivate supportive relationships.

[45:39] What does a healthy gut like to eat?

[48:23] Health is having the energy and the drive to do the things that you love.

A few weeks ago I was speaking at an event called Mind Body Reset, and one of the speakers that came before me was Sylvie Tetrault. Sylvie is a holistic nutritionist, a trainer, and the host of the Championship Lifestyle Podcast. The focus of Sylvie’s career is getting all of us to execute as high performers. Sylvie shared so much great wisdom that I approached her after the event and asked her to come on the podcast and talk to my audience.

Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with her and we covered all sorts of elements but most importantly we talked about how to go from that place where we’re sort of floundering with what we eat and how we exercise, to the types of strategies we should implement in order to get a plan in place. Whether you’ve been wanting to get going or you already have a program and want to take it to the next level, this conversation is for you.

Key Takeaways:

[2:56] Sylvie became interested in strength training after she realized that she couldn’t do a pull-up. She has now had the opportunity to train a lot of high performers.

[6:42] What does an appropriate recovery time look like?

[15:03] You can learn to make healthy recipes, and it doesn’t have to take a long time. Eating well needs to be a priority.

[16:35] Eating right will help you in all areas of your life.

[17:35] Start by increasing your movement rather than adopting an “exercise plan.”

[23:01] What’s the right way to do cardio?

[26:25] What elements will the best exercise plan incorporate?

[31:42] Sometimes you have to think outside the box to find the right solution for your health.

[33:45] How can you find a good trainer?

[37:00] Sylvie focuses on helping people find their individual path to wellness.

[37:36] Health is knowing your body and its needs.

I can’t think of a better audience to speak to on this topic because those of you who are listening are the doers of this world. You’re not people who are okay or satisfied with fine, and you are people who are willing to pick up a call to action and do something. We need to do something good for this world. I honestly believe that when people are well, they can change the world. I do what I do because I know that if teachers and parents and CEOs and entrepreneurs are strong and healthy, then they can invoke change in their communities with their ideas, inspiration, and actions.

In the next few minutes, I’m going to tell you what diabetes and hurricanes have in common, and what you can do to move the needle on one of the most important issues we are facing as a collective group of people.

Key Takeaways:

[1:39] This episode is a call to action.

[3:47] Mother Nature is angry.

[4:56] Diabetes takes years to develop, and we must take deliberate action.

[7:23] Nature is beginning to buckle under the pressure we are applying against it.

[7:58] So what do hurricanes and diabetes have in common?

[8:24] People use sugar for a rapid energy boost.

[12:28] Sugar is particularly problematic if a system is already challenged.

[13:39] If you abuse your body, your cells may stop listening.

[16:42] Most pre-diabetic people think they are fine.

[18:06] Drugs to lower cholesterol complicate blood sugar problems.

[19:55] Right now is the prime time for a change, for our health and the health of the planet.

Today’s interview was a real pleasure for me. I had the opportunity to interview someone that I both admire and consider a friend, Lori Kennedy. Lori is a holistic nutritionist by background and has gone on to build an online business where she teaches other practitioners how to scale their impact and their message in the online space.

What’s remarkable to me is not necessarily the business that Lori has built, but the life she has built. Far too often we sit back and envy what other people have, but Lori has gone out and built her life on purpose.

Today’s podcast is all about how to do that for yourself, and how you can give yourself permission to take your life and your purpose to the next level.

Key Takeaways:

[3:12] Lori is a writer and an empowerer of women.

Today I sat down with a friend and colleague, Dr. John Dempster, ND. Over the last several years, Dr. Dempster has developed a real passion for addressing mental health, both within his patient population and in the broader entrepreneurial world through some of his online summits.

We got into some of the things that we both feel are missing in the lives of our patients that set them up to be more at risk for inability to manage anxiety and depression on a daily basis. John goes on to talk more about how he evaluates new patients that come into his practice looking to find more stability in respect to their mental health. What we discovered as we delved deeper into our conversation is that there are significant and consistent tenets that actually set up for success when it comes to our mental health, and there are certain habits and social norms that tend to pull us down.

This interview was insightful because it was personal. There’s not a single person listening who isn’t touched by mental health problems through their patients, clients, friends or family. This is something that we can all relate to and information that we can all use.

Key Takeaways:

[3:24] Dr. Dempster lost two of his uncles to chronic disease when he was very young and watching them go through conventional treatments that failed really affected him.

[4:47] Dr. Dempster realized the importance of nutrition and root cause resolution.

[6:36] What is functional medicine and how does it differ from naturopathic medicine?

[7:55] How did Dr. Dempster become passionate about mental health?

[11:42] Almost a quarter of Dr. Meghan’s patients are on antidepressants.

[13:47] Mental health is related to gut health.

[16:02] Healing doesn’t happen instantly. We need to reevaluate our environments and relationships.

[17:46] Dr. Dempster’s priorities shifted when he became a parent.

[21:02] How does Dr. Dempster manage anxiety?

[24:40] How does busyness contribute to adrenal fatigue?

[28:14] Naturopathic physicians have more tools at their disposal than MDs.

[31:05] A sense of community is really important to health.

[32:21] We need “Vitamin N.”

[33:23] Dr. Dempster hopes that he will be known as someone who really cared and who listened to his patients.

[34:28] What is health?

Alex Charfen first became an entrepreneur during his teenage years and learned some very important lessons about business through early failures. At his peak of his financial success, he found himself incredibly unhealthy and stressed out. Understanding he needed to change, he created a wildly successful real estate business with his wife and began living life on his own terms.

Finally, when Alex was ready to sit down and write his own book to help entrepreneurs, he had to take a step back and ask himself, who exactly, is an entrepreneur? What makes someone want to even become an entrepreneur? This is how his book, Entrepreneurial Personality Type, came to be. He realized through all the years of working with entrepreneurs and wildly successful business people, they all had one thing in common. They were outliers. They were risk takers, and society thought they were just strange.

On this week’s episode, Alex discusses his book, why entrepreneurs are wired differently, and their beneficial purpose to society, and how entrepreneurs can use this knowledge to prosper in their own professional and personal lives.

Key Takeaways:

[2:25] Alex has spent his career trying to figure out what makes entrepreneurs tick and, through that, he’s found that there are key entrepreneurial personality types that make us who we are.

[3:20] How did Alex first get started as an entrepreneur?

[6:15] When you read books about successful people, there are very clear distinct patterns for why these people became successful.

[9:55] Life sometimes throws you curveballs. At 22 years old, Alex became a fortune 500 consultant.

[11:25] At 32 years old, Alex was unhealthy and he had to make a shift in his lifestyle. He ended up opening a real estate  business with his wife.

[13:00] One day, Alex decided to sit down and write a book about all the things he’s learned about business over the years, but when he sat down to write his target audience, aka entrepreneurs, he couldn’t figure out who they really were. This shocked him. He’s worked with entrepreneurs and highly successful people all his life, how could he not know who they were?

[14:30] So, instead of writing about the book he had initially intended to, he wrote Entrepreneurial Personality Type.

[17:00] What is the Entrepreneurial Personality Type book about?

[18:00] Personality type one: The Caretakers.

[19:20] Personality type two: The Communicator.

[20:35] Personality type three: The Coordinators.

[22:35] Personality type four: The Hunters.

[23:55] The hunter group is the smallest group out of those four. The hunters are entrepreneurs. They are the trendsetters, but they’re also seen as intimidating and scary.

[27:25] What kinds of differences has Alex noticed between male and female entrepreneurs?

[38:45] Alex mentioned at the height of his financial success, he was at his unhealthiest. What has his health journey been like over the years?

[42:05] If you’re not optimizing yourself, then you’re not optimizing your business.

[46:25] What does Alex want his legacy to be?

[50:10] Take this month’s quiz at meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[50:50] Let’s look at Alex’s key performance indicators!

Tweetables:

“We are the smallest part of the human species. The Hunters make up the smallest group, and the rest of the world simply doesn’t understand us.”

“They call us risk takers, intimidating, frightening, and scary. We do things that just don’t make sense and are illogical.”

“We’re fundamentally different from the rest of the world. We get up everyday and demand that the world improve.”

MORE ABOUT ALEX CHARFEN

Alex has studied greatness for decades and here is what he has found: All of the notable entrepreneurs down through history have a great deal in common with each other, and, quite frankly, very little in common with the rest of the world. They share The Entrepreneurial Personality Type (EPT) with all of its quirks and idiosyncrasies. They are a restless bunch with an intrinsic need to move and build and strive. His own remarkable entrepreneurial journey reflects that.

His professional career started at the tender age of eight. Economic factors forced the emergency sale of his family’s business, making it necessary for him to start working, selling things with his dad at a local flea market. He quickly found that, unlike the rest of the world he lived in, the business environment felt safe. He innately understood it. The exchange of money for goods and services made sense. He grew and continued to learn about commerce, reading voraciously about the great business minds down through the ages. In his teen years, he began to launch and build businesses of his own, sometimes failing and sometimes wildly succeeding. His high flying Florida real estate business became a victim of the 2008 downturn, but he rebounded by turning that tragedy into a thriving business built around helping others in real estate understand the world of distressed properties, of which there were many at the time. For that, homeowners and real estate experts are eternally grateful. In fact the U.S. Treasury Office has data that shows that Alex’s CDPE process shortened the recovery of the foreclosure crisis in this country by at least five years.

Now, Alex has turned his attention and resources to what is without a doubt the most important work he believes he will ever do- helping other EPT’s prosper and understand themselves so they can make the difference that they are intended to make. His book, The Entrepreneurial Personality Type, published in 2016, has become the handbook for his restless tribe around the world looking for answers. He has obviously struck a resonant chord with his findings and his continued learning and discoveries on the subject. He’s spoken on the biggest stages, appeared on TV and in print for major media outlets such as MSNBC, CNBC, FOX News, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily and AmEx OPEN Forum to provide his unique views and insights. His next book, Momentum, will publish in early 2018.
