I was really excited to sit down with our guest today, Dr. Andrea Maxim. She’s an entrepreneur, naturopathic doctor, and unapologetically interested in driving her entrepreneurial spirit and finding ways to have a massive impact on her profession.

In this episode, I was lucky enough to get her take on a few things: the trends she has been seeing within entrepreneurialism, where she thinks we should be investing our time and energy as we move into 2018, and the common elements that she has seen — both in her journey as well as her clients — in terms of successful outcomes.

This is a great interview because it’s that balance between business through the lens of someone who’s in healthcare — who understands the need to have boundaries and limitations in terms of how far we push. We also talk about what it means to really be an overnight success and the 10 years of work it takes to get to that place. This is an interview for people who are interested in understanding how you can become passionate about looking for a career in helping others and the type of hustle and strategy and self-investment that goes along with it.

Key Takeaways:

[3:43] Dr. Andrea Maxim takes us through the journey that got her to where she is now.

[7:04] The concept of ‘endgame’: what it means to Dr. Andrea.

[10:39] Where Dr. Andrea’s mindset of “I just know I can do it” came from and how to think optimistically.

[17:31] The importance of failing to achieve success.

[18:59] Detaching yourself from others’ opinions and Dr. Andrea’s obliger tendency with a side of rebel.

[22:20] Straddling the line between healthcare practitioner and hustling entrepreneur: Dr. Andrea’s predictions for key marketing trends for small businesses in 2018.

[26:30] Finding the balance between finding personal touch-points with clients while also limiting your access and taking a step back.

[29:11] Where Dr. Andrea plans on moving forward this coming year, where she plans to invest her time and money in terms of personal growth, and what her best personal investment has been in the past.

[34:01] An important exercise in gaining — and being open to — personal insight.

[36:13] How to filter out the noise of advice and suggestions, to process it and find the one, clear path to take.

[39:36] What Andrea would like her legacy to be.

[40:39] How Andrea describes health.

[42:03] Andrea’s key-performance indicators!

[45:05] Where to find Andrea online.

Today is a super fun interview because it was all about money — our attitudes towards it and our core beliefs about it. We segued right into the concept of ‘how do you go about spending your money, guilt-free?’

My guest today, Shannon Simmons, the author of Worry-Free Money — which just released today. She also owns The New School of Finance and she runs a series of programs online to teach the notion of financial acumen. As a new mom, she gets the pressures of the millennial, emerging entrepreneurial lifestyle and the shift that we’re seeing in our society — that is we’re moving away from the idea that everything is secure and easy to the fact that we need to have a new idea and paradigm as we approach money.

I can’t have a podcast or a business that focuses on producing healthy outcomes for people if we don’t talk about money — and that’s exactly what we did today and why I’m so excited to share this interview with you, between myself and Shannon Simmons.

Key Takeaways:

[1:46] About the interview today with Shannon Simmons.

[2:38] The consistent sources of stress I see when people come in for their intakes with me.

[4:00] How Shannon became not only an expert on finances but how she’s positioned that knowledge in a totally unique way.

[5:46] Shannon’s book on guilt-free spending and the simple things we need to look at when it comes to having a happier financial life.

[9:20] The first step to saving to appease that fear-based scarcity mindset.

[10:24] The most important side: cutting out traditional budgeting.

[13:13] What Shannon insists you do: Spend your money for you!

[15:53] Why Shannon thinks we have such complicated emotions in the relationship we have with money.

[17:57] Everyone’s inherent need to ‘keep up’ and how Shannon maintains a healthy grip on the ‘comparison game.’

[23:43] The fundamental basics of financial literacy.

[27:23] Ratios and benchmarks people should be aware of when it comes to debt.

[30:16] Allocating cash flow and paying yourself first.

[33:56] How to get that dopamine fix without spending money and avoiding that ‘f*ck it’ moment.

[36:12] Keeping open and honest with friends, family, and children in the conversation of money.

[38:35] The negative ways parents transmit their beliefs to their children about money.

[40:39] The importance of transparency.

[41:57] The first step to changing our relationship with money.

[44:45] The sentiment of success: changing your paradigm.

[46:01] What Shannon wants her legacy to be.

[46:58] How Shannon defines health.

[48:22] Rapid-fire questions for Shannon!

Dec 5, 2017

As entrepreneurs, we get caught in the mindset that we can out-work or out-hustle everyone to get to the next level. When we hear that it’s important to focus and be mindful we feel that we are different. We have to hustle.

The reality is that running around like a crazy person, trying to be everything to everyone at all times, ultimately leads to burnout and ineffectiveness. Today I’m sitting down with Dave Ruel to look at the simple things — the operations of a business — to be effective and to stay healthy.

Key Takeaways:

[3:30] Dave began his first health business by selling cookbooks.

[6:25] Dave wanted to launch his own business in order to have more freedom, but he became overworked and experienced burnout.

[8:56] How do you know if you are caught in a burnout phase?

[14:38] You don’t have to hustle and grind to be a successful entrepreneur.

[16:29] You may need to go through the “burnout recovery program.”

[21:13] You must learn to manage yourself.

[23:16] This is how Dave structures his day.

[29:43] How can you connect with people without letting email take over your life?

[36:00] What software does Dave use for project management?

[37:57] There are so many options for planners and journals for entrepreneurs. Choose one that helps you prioritize.

[47:04] Take this month’s quiz at Meghanwalker.com/entrepologyquiz.

[47:26] Let’s look at Dave’s key performance indicators!

[54:09] Here’s how to follow Dave.
